Turtle shell slate call
« on: June 15, 2017, 11:42:24 AM »
I thought I would try and make a call out of a turtle shell I found while turkey huntin. Of course I wanted to hunt with it but also look decent. It is hand painted O D green with black outline. It has a cedar sound board with slate on top. It took me some time to get a sound I thought was worth taking in the woods. I was worried when I glued it the sound would be off. To some ears it may be off. To me, I think it will call a turkey in.

I saw the title and wondered what a turkey shell was.  Haha.  But seriously, I really like that you made the effort to turn something you found while turkey hunting into a turkey call.  That is the folk art that lies within.  I think it looks great.  I've always? wanted to make one too.  The fact that you used a soundboard makes a big difference and sets it apart.  The old school ones were bare bones unless they had that " vibrating tongue" design.  Great job bud!

My first homemade calls were snuff cans and turtle shell fix just like this one. The only thing i added was string after drilling a small hole in the shell to carry it around my neck with a cut piece of cedar with a corn cob on the end...
