Win 3" HV 1 3/4 #5
« on: April 15, 2017, 10:24:06 AM »
Anybody getting truly great results with the Winchester HV 3" 1 3/4 oz. load of #5?

I have tried this load in 3 guns and multiple chokes and the best it will do is about 135 in 10".

Probably kill all of the turkeys I want with it but even at 30 yards it seems a bit lacking in density.

I have gotten better patterns from 2oz. Flite Control #4s and regular full choke than I get from these.

Best my gun ever got was around 110 @ 40yds with those.  If you're putting 135 #5's in the 10" at 40yds you're got a killer.

If you're shooting 2oz of #4's at getting over 135 pellets in a 10" circle at 40yds I just be buying a crap load of 2oz #4's.  Nothing is walking away from that.

My bad on my numbers with the Winchesters.  :morning:

Went back and did a little looking. Around 100 in the 10" with them. Still bet it would kill fine.

Maybe get out after season and do a little shooting to confirm numbers again, been 2 years since I shot that gun trying to find a decent load.

I killed quite a few birds with the Win #5's and mine would be right around 100, on a great day 110 would top it out.

Honestly the old gray box Winchesters that are dirt cheap have out shot the 1 3/4oz load from my guns.  I've had good luck with the 5's and 6's in them.

Longbeards are an immediate pattern boost if you're looking for bigger numbers from lead.  5's were spotty from my .660.  6's were 184 in the 10" and 350+ in the 20".  I've not tried the 4's.

#5 Longbeards from my gun gain about 30 in the 10" as compared to #5 3" Thugs. Have not tried #6 Longbeards.

Tried the Winchester XX, Super-X, HV in 3" 5's. Had a difficult time breaking 100 in a 10 a@ 40. Shot 870's with Kicks .655, .660,.665. 21" bbl, 26" bbl, 28"bbl. Shot in the 80's most of the time and broke 100 once. At 40 yds the concern was putting enough shot in the turkey. Big gaps.  Shot 140's-160's with the Winchester loads in 3" 6's.   Shot over 200 with LB 5's and 6's in 3".  More consistent patterns with the Win LB 6's.
