Pot holes

Ok... how do I minimize tear out while drilling my sound holes? I look at some of the call you guys make and I notice very clean crisp holes. Should I turn my blank then drill?

Or should I drill then turn to help clean them up which I am currently doing in that order?

Sharper drills?

This is what I do as well. I've tried both. I find sanding can be a little more difficult if holes are pre-drilled but definatly don't have tear out issues. I've also read some guys drilling last but using CA glue as a layer, then drill, then sand off the CA. Just another idea for ya. Supposedly you don't have flakes this way either.

If you want to turn the blank to shape first, you certainly can. Just put painters tape, (masking tape) over the call where you are going to drill. Laying down tape first also works on your miter saw and table saw for other projects.

I drill mine first but I also use Freud Forstner bits for my sound holes.  I ease them into my blank and it Gives them a nice clean cut.
