Cypress
« on: September 24, 2016, 07:08:18 PM »
Just wondering why you don't see more calls made from cypress. I've got 40 acres of land that has some as cypress that is very old 500 years. Getting ready to sell the timber and just don't know.
I'm a player not a maker.
Thanks, Marlton

Best cypress box call I've ever played was made by Albert Paul. For the most part they are low toned. It's difficult to get the arc right without creating dips in it due to the softness of most cypress.

Cypress has a Janka hardness of 510 which is harder than butternut but softer than poplar.  Several top callmakers have pulled it off including Steve Mann etc etc.  I would say wood selection is the key factor.

I bet if it was stabilized, it would make some awesome sounding pot calls!

I have seen cypress pots before but I can't remember where.  As a wood I believe it's very inconsistent due to various factors.  Some of it feels like balsa wood and some feels hard as heck.  I have a cypress scratchbox from Tim Sanford that looks and sounds great also.

the different densities in the wood is exactly why it would be a good candidate for stabilizing.  Below is an owl and pot call I did from some figured ash.  Dyed and stabilized green.  The dye and resin goes into the soft wood, making it hard when cured.  The hard wood resists the resin, remaining untouched, producing some very unique color combinations.

Here is the Australian cypress. Both the pot and the striker are made from it. It is a softer wood, so the striker is higher pitched, but all in all it sounds pretty good to me.
