Mossberg 500 12gauge
« on: April 03, 2016, 12:09:03 PM »
I bought a older Mossberg 500 and now I'm looking to set it up with lead. It came with a .665 Kicks. I'm going to try some Winchester double X magnum 6s and some of the older triple plus wad federal 5s.  Any body have experience or suggestions on this gun and choke?

My uncle has the same gun with same choke. His is the woodland camo with 28" bbl.Its been his go to gun for the spring for 15+ yrs. He just won't put it down for anything else, lol.I haven't been able to talk him down to a 20 ga yet. He's old school and not a # counter but in his gun, Win XX & HV #6s do best. We didn't count pellets, but from what  I saw it was a 120+  type pattern with the XX 6s. I gave him a box of magblends a few years ago and they killed just fine for him that year but like I said he's old school and went back to the Win 6s. The 2 loads you mentioned should do fine, as you know your not gonna get super high numbers from those shells but you should see nice even hunting patterns.

Thanks man.   I just finished my first round of patterning.  High Velocity 6s went 101. The old Double X magnum 3-2-6s went 106.  Gun shoots way low and to the left. I'm going to add a set of sights and try a little tighter choke next.

I have a 28" with a old .650 hastings, shot good with the shells you mentioned but last year just to see I shot some #6 LB's and put 210 - 220 every shot.

I have one and shoot a cheapo Hunters Specialties through it with Longbeard 6's.  Shoots good enough for a backup to my backup to my backup to my backup to my backup to my backup.

Lol. This will be the back up to my rainy day gun.  I'm trying to get away from the LongBeards.  They shoot great for long shots.  But im needing something a little more open for the close up shots.
