I agree with Al. I have one that someone made many years ago and I remember it was a thin piece of copper

I really don't think thickness will matter much.  either one. as long as you have sufficient glue down making contact with the whole surface to surface contact area.  I've experimented with what happens with not enough glue to verses too much.  not enough, and you get screechy sounds, too much, and it oozes up along the edges, and you have clean up after it dries, which isn't all bad, little time consuming, but you get better sounds.  Also I've experimented with the wood contact surface.  Leaving it just plain flat and glue on the material, and machining out a slot, leaving a 1/16 edge for the surface to sit on and be glued on.  I've found no significant sound difference's.  Please keep in mind, this is in my design, and different designs might have different results.

And for neutral opinion send me one of your calls when your finished and let me try one this season.
I will give you my opinion after I use it awhile.
Lol. Hope your call is great

thanks mastevt for the help I did machine a slot but left plenty of surface for glue.
I have not ordered the copper yet I have been busy with other things.
I will post pics when I can get back in the shop

make sure you check the coppers gluing surface with a straight edge.  If its bent slightly, and you don't get a good contact
with the whole piece, it can mess up your sound.  Post up a sound file when you get it done.  I would really like to hear it.

Just my two cents worth...I use 1/8" copper glue it to a flat surface with ports drilled out under it spaced evenly through the length I make certain the layer of glue is thick enough to warrant clean up afterwards as this will ensure complete contact...also I have found that using 1" wide pieces of copper works best for me...also allows more room to work the striker across the ports....again to each their own...I think it definitely depends on the call's design...pappy
