Mouth piece help
« on: August 05, 2015, 11:20:26 PM »
Well, I've decided to get my feet wet on trying to turn a few tubes for myself.  So far I have a walnut and a couple cedar tubes turned and I'm wanting to figure out how y'all get the flush fit mouth pieces.  Tube calls are new to me and I have became fascinated with them.  I have 3 dif types of latex material, and am getting decent.  I just want to make my own tube.  Also, any suggestions on what wood types to get to turn for a beginner like myself?  Tgsbks

Here is what I do for my mouth piece. My tubes have a 1" hole on the mouth end. So when I start turning my tube and turn 1 end down to 1" about 1/8" thick. Then I cut that piece off and sand it down to a half moon on my belt sander. Then I put the beginning piece of wood back on the lathe and drill the hole out and turn the outside. Once the tube is done I put that half moon piece in for the mouthpiece and glue it in. That way the mouth piece is part of the same wood. Thats just the way I do it. Hope it helps.
