Fed HW #7 vs Nitro 4x5x7 Hevi
« on: March 23, 2015, 01:18:51 PM »
I normally use Nitro Mega Weight 4x5x6x7 averaging 280-290 in the 10" but haven't been able to get any this year and I am down to 2 shells so as a backup I got some Fed HW #7 and already had some Nitro 4x5x7 Hevi but had never shot them. Having never used either so I am not sure of density, knock down power etc and based on the following patterns (both are good), which is the best option. Attached pix but not sure if they will show as don't see them on preview, if they don't can someone tell me an easy way to post them.
1. Nitro 4x5x7 Hevi IC .690 55 degrees 309 in 10"
2. Fed HW #7 Hastings .690 55 degrees 244 in 10"

I envy your pattern, but not the pain you are receiving in recoil from the nitro load.

deadbuck, you are correct on the recoil of the Nitro's but I guess I am a wus as I use a Lead Sled for most patterning ;D. I will shoot from hunting positions to ensure POI but other than that just so much easier to use the sled. Any opinions on the difference in density of shot material or just pick one and go start hunting?

I prefer the Federal Heavyweight #7 loads. I got tired of the pixie dust shot that Nitro loads have.

The Federal loads are ALL business.

Ive been using nitros for about 10years or so I started out using hevi 4x5x7 the went to mega weight absolutely loved both of them, but like you said they don't make mega-weight anymore, I went back to the hevi shot. you will regret your your decision.. its about 10 of us guys around my little town who shoot them, none of us are displeased. I will tell you this we all shoot rhino choke tubes. we tried just about every choke made for 10ga. then we all ended up with rhinos .720, but that's just us. good luck God bless
