shot my bps today.
« on: March 23, 2011, 08:49:44 PM »
Well dispite the wind it was a perfect day. I picked up my jellyhead .695 today and wanted to share the results. I shot federal #6's and winchester supreme #5's at 45 yrds the federal 5's and the 6's put 42 in a 6 inch circle. At 55 yrds the 6's put 21 and the #5's put 16. I know these are not the best but I just got the gun and am still playing with it. It is still factory minus the jellyhead .695 I put in it. I still feel confident enought to kill a bird at 50 what do y'all think?

IME..if the PB shells you choose don't shoot at least 1300fps no matter the #of hits past 35-40 yards
don't shoot at any Turkeys at that distance.JMO from experience's in the turkey woods shootin a 10ga.
with lead ammo...

with the hevi 5's, you wont get the pattern density that you would with nitros or smaller hevi shot, but the 5's have have great knockdown power that will stop a turkey like a wall of bricks

I love the hevishot 5s in my mag 10. For me they throw the best pattern i have ever seen at 60 yds.Have been blessed to have killed 2 birds this year. One at 64 yds and one at 47. they hit  hard.Good luck.

I got the H13 2 3/8 #5 load to shoot 160 with my SP10 - it is a very good load , but not nearly as good as the nitro's

I would shoot the H13 10 gauge load over any lead load available out there

Definitely before any lead...I patterned that em 5 once upon a time. Still shooting nitro in the 10.

I know the nitros are a heck of a load in my 12ga! I have heard of numerous folks killing birds at 60 +yds and I hunt a good many field turkeys I may have found the poison with a ten and a nitro!

I just got my Jellyhead .695 for my 10 ga. BPS last week (24" barrel , polished)  All I had at the time was lead shot.  At 40 yds. , 10" circle I got 71 pellets with Win High Speed 5's and 79 pellets in 10" with some Remington Premier magnum 4's that are buffered.   The Remington Premiers are in a "treebark" look camo box.  Anyone know if they still make these, the box looks like it might be several years old ?
I'm going to get some Hevi shot coming.

Lead is only good out to ABOUT 40 yards MAX.

are you refering to pattern or to energy? because i can tell you from experience that it is good past 40 and will kill a bird at 67. . i know others who have killed birds past 40 and several have killed them at 60.

Lead 4s still have serious energy past 40 and are capable when striking vitals. Problem is I've never seen a viable pattern from lead 4s past 50 yards that I'd ever try on a turkey. Trying birds past 60 yards is a squeeze the trigger and "hope for the best" desperation shot with any lead. It's not that it won't kill em but its a guess not a matter if knowing your pattern can do it. If I'm guessing about a shot, its not one to take. Only thing worse than missing is crippling.
