New versa max sportsman choke an load help
« on: January 13, 2015, 11:50:17 PM »
Bought a new versa max sportsman and wondering which choke an load do pretty good with the pro bore set up. Are the pro bore set ups as good as the old regular 870 barrels?

660 to 665.  Winchester XR or HV13 should fix you up.

It is a good gun just .735 and long forcing cone.
Tell us just how dead do you want them to be and we will see if we can get that for you.

I guess I'm going with a pure gold .670 and magnum blend. Anyone shooting a pure gold in a versa?

The Pure Gold or JEB's are doing best for my readers.

Thanks,

I HAVE ONE AND HAD A CHANCE TO SHOT IT A LITTLE
IM USING STOCK CHOKE AND FEDERAL TURKEY THUGS 3" @ 3 1/2"
I USED A BIG PEICE OF CARDBOARD AND DREW TWO 3" BLACK DOTS
I SHOT ONE 3" AND ONE 3 1/2" AND THE PATTERN WAS ALOT BETTER , MORE EVEN
WITH THE 3" SHOT
AND I USED THE BARREL SITES THATS ON THE GUN BARREL

My best setup was with a Sumtoy choke. It was very dense even pattern with Winchester XR, Winchester Long Beards, Hevi #5's and Federal 6's.

Prior to the Sumtoy choke, I shot / tried a Pattern Master, Pure Gold & Gobbling Thunder.

Those guns shoot great. Are the Probore barrels as good as the regular 870 barrels? Better from what I have seen. The slight overbore and the long forcing cone make a difference.

Try the Longbeard XR. They will shoot good in that gun with most any turkey choke you try.

Anyone found a combo better than factory choke ?  Indian creek let me down .  I want to shoot Longbeards # 4 but open to 5's or 6's.  Any links to some pictures of various Jeb patterns in a versa ?

I see you have  3-5 posts pulled up on this subject and you say the Indian creek let you down.
I have to lean a little more to the ammo.
Im sure you can keep trying chokes and youll get a lot of recommendations here.
Each gun/choke/ ammo combo ends up specific . meaning what works in one guys gun even though its exactly like your may not work in in yours.
I too have been playing the patterning game a lot this season with a few different guns .loads chokes ect.
 It ends up costing lol
All that said You should stick with the Indian Creek for now and try some different loads. Im not seeing anyone disliking  those IC chokes.
And , Ill add  a question or 2.
What are your expectations here?  Tight at long ranges ?  Even patterns? Repeatable moderate range patterns?
What do you not like with what you have now?

Don't discount the Hevi 7's with that Pure Gold.  Hevi 7's hammer birds in my 835 and many more on here will attest to the same.

IMHO Winchester XR or Hevi-13 will fix you up regardless of what you`re shooting if it`s 12 gauge.
