870 Deer for turkeys
« on: April 18, 2014, 03:27:46 PM »
Any reason that a 20'' smoothbore Deer barrel with rem chokes won't double as a great turkey gun?

Should work really well,  nice and compact.  Throw a good turkey choke in it, find the load it likes, and go hunt.  Should be easy to find a good combo with the Long Beards and most chokes.

A good choke (ie Sumtoy), a studded magazine cap, and claw sling.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

It's a great choice. My backup is that same gun and is one of my favorites. Throw a jellyhead on there and you're good to go.

No reason at all. I bought an extra slug barrel for my Rem. 870. It came with open sights and Rem. chokes Imp Cyl. and the short flush rifled tube. I use the now discontinued Rem. "Ventilator" turkey choke in it for turkey hunting. That short barrel sure is handy at times.

How well does that rifled choke work? Is it more accurate with sabots and that rifled choke or is it just as accurate as foster slugs through the imp cyl.?

Should be a great gun. Short and already has rifle type sights. That short barrel probably will like a tight choke like the ventilator or kicks .655.

I'm definitely going to take a close look at that Kick's choke. Should I be worried about limited to only 2 3/4 shells with my old wingmaster? I don't think it will be too much of a handicap but I wanted to know your opinion on that?

Some say I can single feed 3'' shells in my old wingmaster but just not expect them to eject properly? Maybe that's another solution?

Does your barrel have a 3" chamber? Even if it did I wouldn't want to be handicapped, just so I could shoot a bigger shell. I'd bite the bullet and buy the new gun.

You can change the ejector to a three inch and have some minor fitting done by a competent gunsmith.  Or, you can just try and run a three inch shell in there and see how it functions.  It may work fine without alterations.  But, I would buy a new gun since I like buying new guns. :z-guntootsmiley:

It's my father's 1966 wingmaster, so I'm doing it partly sentimental reasons and also because it's the smoothest pump action I've ever felt. The receiver is 2 3/4 but this aftermarket deer barrel 3.5'' chamber I believe. I don't see why I can't put a fancy turkey choke on there and single feed it some 3'' shells and call it a day!?!?

Are people using hevi-shot through the Kick's choke? It seems like people are to great effect but it isn't recommended1?!?

Can someone talk me out of opting for the RedHead BlackOut .660 choke? It's reasonably priced and I would use the difference in price to buy a recoil paid and swivel magazine cap + Stud.
