As a starting point 4,5 or 6s just n my combo?
« on: March 31, 2014, 08:03:53 PM »
24inch ported barrel 835/factory Ulti-Full choke.

I am looking at the win longbeard XRs or Fed Turkey Thugs. .Does my combo have a tendency to like one size more than another?Same question for 3in vs 3.5s?..I realize everyone's result can differ, but thought maybe the folks shooting a similar setup may have some insight ..Also it looks like the longbeards are only available in 4s or 6s locally..

Thanks in advance

5 or 6 shot

Why shoot a 3.5"? Because they don't make a 4".

Thanks for the replies!! The local shop only had 4s an 6s in stock the other day..If two sizes patterned close to the same what is the pros an cons each way? Is it 4s have less shot in it but retain more kinetic energy an momentum farther whereas  6s would have more shot but would have less KE an momentum? Am I on the right track? So 5s would be middle ground between them?

You're exactly right. 4s have more Ke per pellet but you get more pellets in a #6 shell, and 5s fall right between 4s and 6s. Personally, with today's loads I think 5 and 6 are your best bet to get a good even pattern with minimal holes in it. 4s,5s, and 6s all have plenty of energy to kill at 40yards and farther.

You're on the right track. Factory choke... I'd say longbeard 4s. You could try the 6s also. I've been waiting to get out and try my factory choke with the lb 5s I found.

The long beards 3.5" #4s shoot good with my 835 & factory choke.

If you are going to shoot lead for sure then 5's or 4's...IMO 6 lead is running out of energy really quick at outer ranges not that it hasn't or wouldn't smoke some turkeys.  If you can find a 4 or 5 that pattern well then I'd choose those.
shoot first, measure spurs later
Don't miss "The Break" our new outdoor TV show featuring the www.HuntersLink.com team on the Hunt Channel Ch.266 on Dish Network.  All episodes can be seen on Hunt Channel on ROKU and streaming devices and on the website as well...Enjoy and thanks for the support!

Mine does really good with the Turkey Thugs #5. Not big numbers but a really even pattern.

I would use #6 for denser patterns.  Gobblers are easy to kill when hit in the right place, it doesn't take large shot or a lot of energy.
