This will cover the basic instructions for creating a custom comb riser for your wooden butt stock to raise your line-of-sight up to your red-dot or scope. The comb, in my case, only needed to be raised about 5/8" above the existing comb, so weight was kept to a few ounces.
Remove the butt stock from the gun and lightly sand the finish down to bare wood. Wipe the stock down with acetone or isopropyl alcohol to remove any oils from the surface.
Take a block of light hardwood (like poplar or birch) and roughly carve or grind out one of the long, narrow sides. Tape a 1/2 sheet of 60 grit sandpaper over the top of the stock and sand the ground-out section of the wood block by sliding it along the top radius of the stock. This will create a concave surface on the block and will allow a nice fit between the two pieces.
Glue the two pieces together using 15 minute epoxy, completely covering the sanded, concave surface of the block. Secure with bungee cords or masking tape until cured.
Clamp the stock in a vice with a protective cloth to prevent marring the surface. Take a plane, a spokeshave or a grinder and carefully shape the block to match the lines of the stock.You can reattach the receiver and sight to the stock to check when the height of the comb allows your eyes to easily align with the sight. Continue sanding and smoothly blending the block to the surfaces of the stock.
Finish off with final sanding progressing from 120 to 200 grit, smoothly blending the block to the surfaces of the stock.
Once finished, you can stain and overcoat the stock to match the original, but be aware that different woods will show stain differently. You might also consider camouflaging the gun yourself using flat camo spray paints and stencils, or even hand painting it. You might also decide to have the gun hydrographically dipped in your favorite camouflage for a great finished professional look.
As a note, you can do this project with a used stock when someone replaces their factory stock with a tactical model. You might be able to find one of these that fits your gun at a great bargain price.
