Rem 870 SM, Nitro, .665 Jellyhead
« on: April 17, 2013, 08:44:13 PM »
Shot another one today from the 870 to make sure my new FFIII was on and ready to rock for the season opener next Saturday.  I got about 10 more in the 10" than the other day (10 deg warmer).  I'm pretty pleased with this pattern, choke combo.

Nice!! I'm shooting the same gun with the .662 Hevi choke and put up 211 with 3.5" Magnum Blends

Is that good for these chokes or can they do even better?
I can shoot 40 yards with my 870 and just a full choke and #4 steel shot. But that is stretching it. I would like to shoot 40-50 yrds. and feel comfortable doing it

I'm pretty comfortable with my gun out to 50 yds with this combo.  Matter of fact, just shot a gobbler this past Saturday at 54 paces.  I don't like shooting them that far at all and haven't up to this point.  This is why I have put some time, effort and research into patterning my gun just for these exceptions while turkey hunting.  The one I shot, I don't think was going to get any closer than where I shot him.  There is a ton of information on this site and others for the 870 and choke and shell combinations.  Look around and you'll figure out something for your gun, just not sure about the steel shot thing, most of us use lead and hevi shot.  Hope this helps.

Steel 4s fall to the minimum penetration level (1.25" in ballistic gel) @ 37 yds when launched @ 1300 fps, regardless of how good or bad the pattern is. Steel is the worst possible material with which to hunt turkeys. Ditch the steel and at least shoot lead if cost is an issue, HTL if it is not. Mods here frown on talk about shooting past 40 yds.

Bandedspur, it is not the cost it is what I get the best pattern with. I can blow a hole the size of a golf ball at 30-35 yards and that is with a 2 3/4" shell. This is why I use it. Lead don't cut it for a pattern not in my gun.

Yes, steel does pattern more tightly than lead if you can live with the penetration induced range limitation. I have no doubt that steel 4s will kill to 30-35 yds.
