Reduced Recoil LOad

Orthopedic surgeon put a screw in my shoulder.   Heavy recoil hurts now!!!
I'm shooting an 11-87 with a Heavy 13 choke.   
What reduced recoil (2 3/4") load would you recommend?

First of all, welcome to OG. We're glad you're here and look forward to hearing more from you.

I would recommend that you look for some "Old White" Hevi-13 shotshells. One advantage they had was very low recoil, more like a Winchester AA than a turkey load.

There are still some around. They would give you all the advantages of a great shell without the recoil of some other shells.

Handloading could be a option. It is fairly cheap to roll crimp. Get you a buddy to do the testing. somebody could find you a good recipe.

Find a copy of this months (April 2012) Field and Stream magazine.  Pages 28 & 29 list 9 shells that may help with your situation.  Good luck.

Are you using a 12ga or 20 ga, lots of people knocking them down with a 20ga, might want to consider switching guns if your are using a 12ga

Federal HW has a 2 3/4" #7 load .I am not pos as to who has them but Cheaper Than Dirt or Able's Ammo may have them.

I would personally try a 20 gauge load as the recoil is substantially less
than that of the 12 gauge.

There's another post on here regarding a member's friend who had neck surgery. It was stated that they had good result from 1 1/4 ounce #6 pleasant load. If you can get the payload down and still have a pattern it will kick less. I did see where some of the member were getting good patterns with a .410. Just a thought

Environ Metal makes a bunch of Classic Doubles loads for the older non steel guns that are not bad 2 3/4 #6 pheasant should work at reasonable ranges. They also come 10 to a box instead of 5!

I'd also suggest that he put a Shooter's Friend Recoil Pad over the existing one, whatever it is. It only adds 1/4" to the length of pull. It has a larger footprint and very soft material that absorbs the recoil. It really helps a lot.
