What is the difference between crystal and glass and things to consider when building these type of friction calls?

WillowRidgeCalls

Each builder has a preference to a sound they are looking for out of their calls. Some pots play better with one surface better than the others. Each different surface has a different sound to it. It depends somewhat on the style and cut of your pots.

Honestly, when it comes down to the properties of crystal and glass, you are looking at almost identical one, with the exception of lead crystal. It take three items to make glass,
Sand (silica)
Intense heat changes sand into a fragile form of glass.
Soda ash (sodium carbonate)
This is a powdery white material that is added to the mixture to lower the melting temperature of the sand.
Limestone (calcium carbonate)
This is added to make the glass stronger.
For crystal to be considered lead crystal, you have to add at least 24% lead oxide to the composition,
this does two major things to glass, it makes for a more brilliance to the glass and weight is heavier. Also when you add lead oxide it will soften the glass for carving.....NOW THIS IS WHERE SOUND AND PERFORMANCE IS EFFECTED IN A POT CALL.
On glass, the surface is super hard, so conditioning woul
d be harder to do, but last longer before it needed to be reconditioned, crystal on the other hand, being softer, would be easier to condition, and playing on crystal the bite would take less effort then it would on plain glass. Glass, creates a higher pitch then say slate, and crystal (if you apply the same pressure with the striker) would even play higher, but id you were to lesson then pressure you would hear more rasp on your break then on glass. One last note, glass is more brittle then crystal, therefore it would more likely be prone to cracking then the crystal.
Didn't think so much science could be found in a pot call did ya? pappy
