Fan Bondo Method & Skull Hooker Mount
« on: May 12, 2023, 11:40:18 AM »
Tried something new this year, using bondo to set the tail feathers. Impressed with the results.
There’s youtube videos on the process but basically prep fan as you normally would.

1. Scrape excess meat from tail quills
2. Wash tail with Dawn and blow dry
3. Apply borax generously to quills, shake excess off prior to bondo.
4. Mix bondo w/ hardener per can instructions and apply to front side of quills (you’ll have about 10 minutes to adjust fan angle and feathers before it starts to harden).
Use books or ammo boxes to hold feathers in place until bondo sets.
5. Let bondo harden (20 mins)
6. Flip fan, remix bondo and apply to rear side quills and let harden.
7. Done

No waiting days/weeks for the fan to dry, while pinned to cardboard. Bondo will seal and keep air, moisture, bugs etc out.
Quickest easiest fan I ever did.

Tried a Skull Hooker turkey mount. Its very well made. Fan slips in and is held in place by metal tabs you adjust using inward pressure. It comes with hanging mount hardware or use as a tabletop. Like the deer versions, the view angles can be adjusted. There’s also 3 holes underneath to add beards and/or legs.

For added personalization, the display surface is metal so you can add a 4x6 or smaller magnetic photo frame.

I’ve used 5 minute epoxy on mine with pretty similar results. Good idea
