Tinkering around in the shop
« on: February 25, 2023, 06:41:43 PM »
I’ve always wanted to mess around and try to make some box calls. I don’t know why I started today but I knocked out a couple lids. Well I haven’t tapered them or anything yet but I’ve got the shape cut out. I think I’ll make several lids just for the fun of it and see if they’ll run on one of the boxes I already have. I made one Walnut and one Cherry. I’m just using what I’ve got in the basement. This is going to be fun.

I'm long over do for shop time. I'm also looking to make myself a box call for the coming season. It's been over 10 years since I last made one. I'm looking forward to learning all over again. Good luck with yours and keep it fun.

Thanks, that’s a Lonnie Mabry box. I’m just using it as a reference. Hopefully I’ll make something that can squawk a little bit.

If your looking for some good info on building box calls head over to the THO website. There's all sorts of good info there if a guy digs around a little.

It is important to create a nice clean/consistent radius on the lid, I built a jig so they would always be perfect, seemed like the best way for me to get consistent results.....BUT, I am not an expert box call maker, just offering some thoughts.

Do you have pictures of this jig? I just use a belt sander and a scraper with a radius in it to check high spots.

I do not, haven't messed with boxes in a long time.
