New project gun
« on: February 14, 2023, 05:33:44 AM »
I have about 4 project turkey guns going on at the moment. I am really excited about this 1. I bought an ithaca 37 3” receiver off the big gun auction site. I believe it was a police model due to the parkerized finish and no engraving. The forearm has flats filed into it where it would go into a cruiser rack. In my stockpile at home i have an older turkeyslayer barrel and a stocket along with a few screws etc it needs. Once i get it patterning I will duracoat the metal gray/green parkerized. Heres a few pics of the progression.  Fully assembled it weighs 6lbs 15oz.  With a regular stock it would be a little lighter

I plan to try to pattern it a little today if i can get a spot at the range. Its hard to pattern a gun at the range i go to when you’re shooting 1 shot and then a target change. Seems like there’s always one person sending thousands of rounds downrange here.  I have 2 chokes and 6 or so different loads from long ago i’d like to try.

I was going to start the duracoat process this week but my hardener was, well, hard (old). So have to order some new. :(

Well i was able to send a few downrange. Gun goes off like its supposed to.  I cant get down far enough on the sights with the monte carlo stock. At least not far enough to not wail my cheekbone. Took a few shots bun none of the hot and heavy loads.  I will try to locate a used stock with regular comb.  I prefer that anyway.  I plan to mount a reflex on it at some point.

Here’s a pick with 3” win longbeard #5 at 35 yds.  Shot is high but you get the idea. This is with a cabelas turkey choke .660.  Will be spending more time with it when i get a different stock.

For comparison, my ohio made turkeyslayer same yardage with tss handloaded #9 2 oz.  Factory choke tube.  I gave this gun to my 13 y/o son to use a few months ago. This is his shot from today.

With the time change i finally had time to do a little to this ithaca mutt. Sanded and degreased the receiver and sprayed durafil on the deep gouges and dings. I hope to have time to sand it down and start laying on the durcoat next week
