Flamed or burned wood finish
« on: December 18, 2022, 03:54:56 PM »
I have a couple chestnut longboxes I’m thinking about flaming the outsides on. If you have tried flaming chestnut or Osage and have insights you’d be willing to share please PM me.

me i like a good full flame in a pluming torch and just use the tip of flame   need ,make sure wood is dry or it will crack or  warp  ,,, box calls i would think u should flame before tuning ,,, if calls are made already i would think before flaming them just in case they crack or warp ,,, osage is no problem just dont get realy hot ,,, chestnut never done it but have done lots white oak which  iam sure would be pretty close chestnut
Not taking orders for calls at this time ,,,but my have some on hand  ,,,I Dont sell strikers
I do like copper pot calls,,,,Get them While u can

Mike is 100% correct. I flame a lot of ash and osage, but it is mainly on trumpets and strikers. I would flame the box well before tuning as the heat will cause the wood to warp. I use a handheld propane torch and gradually bring the wood up to temp, dont start right against the wood.
