Favorite domestic wood for Box and pot calls?
« on: November 15, 2022, 09:39:51 AM »
The woodshed is coming along nicely. A couple more 2x8’s to mill. The 1x’s for the floor decking are already milled and the floor will be complete . I should be able to start drying wood this spring sometime after the roof is done.

Mulberry and Catalpa are 1st on the chopping blocks. The Mulberry is threating to fall on a fence and the Catalpas are killing the grass in the front yard. I have access to some Walnut, Ash, Hard Maple, Oak ( white and red), and Hackberry, all of which are on our property. I should be able to get my hands on some Cedar from a guy at work. Not sure what kind yet. I have plans to try my luck at spalting some of the Hackberry. Quaking Aspen is abundant on our property along with Tamarack and some other pines just not sure about making calls from it.

The question I have is what is your favorite domestic wood for pot and box calls or combinations thereof?

Here’s some pics on the progress of the woodshed from a couple weeks back. I keep looking for Biden and CornPop but haven’t seen them behind it yet.

Winter came not long after that pic was taken. 3 ft of snow is making it difficult to get logs to the mill. Most of the floor is in and the cap is on. Stockpiling logs now for this spring and some rafters and a roof.

I really like Stabilized Maple, turns great, Sands and finishes awesome.  After that, anything that is Stabilized, but Unstabilized Hedge, Walnut and Ash are all great woods for pots.

Cherry seems to be a popular pick. Im not sure if I've even seen a cherry tree. I like working with the walnut. It gets kind of creamy looking when you sand it. Almost like your sanding plastic. The only problem I have with it is it makes my nose itch!

We have Cherry trees all over the place here in Alabama. Once you learn to spot them you’ll see them everywhere. There easy to pick out just by the bark.

I have seen boxes by Lamar Williams made from this wood. They sounded good.
