Flapper calls
« on: September 26, 2022, 11:20:08 AM »
Had these wings saved off a couple birds from a few years ago and finally got around to doing what I’d intended. Had a fellow was going to cut me some nice wooden handles for them but he never came through so I cooked up a way to do it myself and think they came out quite well. Keep one for myself and give the others to some friends. Check out the color difference between those two birds, especially how dark the one is. Both come from the same county in the North Carolina mountains. Think all these Florida people moving up here must be darkening the wings on some of our Easterns

One county over. I live in Jackson. That hurricane a coming I’d say the orange groves will come in droves this weekend. I hate them

I just boraxed and pinned them to form like you would a tail. Once it had cured I got all the excess borax off and used a product called Bronzee that I’d used before to “bronze” some turkey feet. After that I finished it with a couple coats of flat spar varnish. Bronzee makes a really good clear finish but unfortunately the stuff I had had set up and wasn’t usable. The spar varnish worked fine. Added the lanyard and wraps just to hang them up.

Made mine a little more compact, and added rubber handle and grommet for lanyard. This wing is one of the deadliest tools in my arsenal. Fly-downs, scratching etc. works unreal……Be safe….

One of my favorite callers.
