The Turpin Long Box advantage.....

A number of people build Turpin style box calls; but I don't recall seeing a Turpin style long box.  Maybe someone else has built a Turpin style long box, and I just don't know about it....that's certainly possible.  But I have built a few, and I really like them, especially this one. I have a Cost style boatpaddle I've hunted with for the last 20 years that will be with me to the end of my turkey hunting days, but this Turpin Long Box could easily take it's place. This one is NFS, but I will have a couple later on for sale when I finish putting the final finish on them.

Very nice ... how much longer is this Turpin Long Box ?

Really like the looks of that long box Marvin.

The Turpin style look box is an inch longer.  Any longer is clumsy and cumbersome.  This length is about right that I would be willing to carry it.

Very cool concept !!!

What's the wood combo ??

Could you post a pic of this call AND the Cost-style paddle caller for scale ??

The top call in the picture is an original Neil Cost Old Death & Destruction Boatpaddle call made of red cedar over red cedar....Neil made very few long boxes with this wood combination...3 or 4.  The owner of this call recently passed away, and I am assisting the widow in finding it a new home. The middle call is my Turpin style long box.  I played with different sizes and lengths....this is what I felt best for handling and sound.  The box is yellow poplar and the paddle lid is bloodwood.  This is the call pictured above.  The bottom call in the picture is a fiddleback maple Turpin style hen box with a Honduras rosewood paddle lid I made.  This is one of the calls I posted a sound file on Sound File Central and some other sites.  The sound chamber of the long box is 1 inch longer.

The boat paddle looks exactly like Lonnie Mabry's . I think they knew one another.

I used my John Eddleman gator gobblin stribbling alot late season this past yr with great results. Its got to be similar in length minus the handle. Mike

I have had several people ask me when I will have the Turpin style long boxes for sale.  This weekend I was able to finish up the 5 long boxes I have built to sell.  I plan on posting some sound file videos on Facebook.  But if anyone on Old Gobbler has interest, please contact me.....

OK, today I posted a sound file video of the Turpin style long box in the first picture of this thread on FB Sound File Central.  I am playing two long boxes in the video, both are made of mineral stained poplar, one with a purple heart lid and the other with a bloodwood lid.  I have two walnut long boxes and one teak long box left if anyone should have interest.  If I were more adept at playing a box call, it would have shown better the quality of the sound of the calls.
