Closest Wood to Poplar
« on: December 16, 2021, 01:56:06 PM »
Thinking about getting on some lists for a couple glass calls and wanted to see what woods are similar to Poplar? Have a Roberts Poplar glass/glass that won’t ever leave my bag, so I want to see what other woods to consider.

Take a look at the janka hardness scale and see what is close to poplar.

Just checked.  American chestnut and poplar are identical in hardness.  Should be some call makers out there with some re-claimed chestnut.

noisy box call that seems to sound like a flock of juvenile hens pecking their way through a wheat field

I’ve always thought Wendell Rye (Lights Out) made a great 3” copper call. I say that to also say he’s had some great chestnut that was reclaimed from a building in Valle Crucis, NC that was built in the mid 1800s. Gorgeous wood.

Magnolia it’s in the same family of trees.   Not a really good idea to rely on jenka scale there are other factors than hardness.
