The brown chalk of old days is hard to find. What I see the most of is:

1- White Chalk
2- Red Chalk
3- Blue Chalk
4- Rain Chalk

I run my boxes with very light coat of white chalk, ( just started using rain chalk this season) the boxes I hunt really don't need any chalk to run. If I have to use chalk for the box to play I will get rid of that box.

But to kinda answer your original question is there a difference? Yes

My top three chalk choices are (in order): rain chalk, then rain chalk, and lastly rain chalk.

My favorites are old red brick or the old old brown sphere chalk.. i will occasionally mix little white with the red. I will agree a good box doesn't need much chalk at all, but i like adding chalk to bring out different sounds and tones of the boxes, why not get the full potential of what that box has to offer. IMO..Rain chalk is alright, but it's not my go to chalk by far... IMO...

1. Red.
2. Blue I do have one call that only sounds good with the blue.
3. White
I have yet to try rain chalk.

I been using the blue half moon. Seems to not last too long but sounds good. I'd like to find some brown if anyone knows where to get it

They have not made the old sphere brown in years, what you find is just old stock.. my suggestion is keep lookout on ebay...
