I thought I posted this from the forest...maybe I did, maybe it’s hung up in a tree. Maybe it’s posted in some other random place... who knows. I’ll try again.
Watched him and a hen pitch down this morning. Figured he’d be tough to get to come to the call. And he was. He courtesy gobbled at my calls but that was all. Tried to make the hen mad, but to no avail. I went quiet and he continued to self gobble every ten minutes or so.
Decided to make a move since I could slip through the trees and hear him to keep an idea where he was.
I’d made it about 100 yards, and I heard a gobble that made me think he was going away. I stepped out of the cover and the gobbler I was slipping in on, gobbled directly behind some young pines... 20 yards maybe..about knocked me over. I slowly eased to the ground, no tree, just sat and gun up. Five minutes... nothing. Then a gobble that was at least 40-50 yards. Thought he busted me, so I yelped , he gobbled back. Next gobble was directly behind the pines, then I caught a hen feeding to the right.
Figured he’d eventually follow , and he did.
Rolled the loud mouth 2 year old with hand made 20 ga TSS. Maybe 8” beard, 3/4” spurs and I’d be surprised if he weighted 14 pounds.
