Federal TSS 7x9 ?
« on: April 06, 2021, 10:08:08 PM »
I saw some today at a local store. I have a few straight 9's. But I was wondering what kinds of patterns people were getting with the duplex load.

Federal had a mix up a couple years ago and packaged the 7x9 in the #9 boxes so I have some. I shot 1 out of my 870 youth with Carlson .575. The #9s had a better pattern but the blend is definitely enough to kill at 40. I will be using them at some point. I don’t have numbers or anything so sorry about that.

The only possible reason to include TSS 7s in a turkey load are to make them legal in states that will allow those but not a straight load of 9s (Bless their backward hearts). TSS 7s have the penetration to kill turkeys to 120 yds while sacrificing pattern density, thus decreasing the load's effective range. It's akin to duplexing lead 8s with 2s in a dove shell.

Thanks for the responses. I ended up finding Apex Ninja and went that route. Had I waited one more day to order I could have bought straight 9's. If the wind dies down in Idaho I will pattern a couple and post pics.
