Another Good Tutorial for Trumpets (or any air calls)

From Mr. Lee (Misfire) who, BTW, makes as good of a trumpet as anyone in the country.
Some very good tips...listen up:

One thing he gets at in this video is why I’m not crazy about the growing trumpet trend , and that’s that birds aren’t used to hearing it. I can think of a few different kills where I knew where hunters would be in relation to birds and I used their pressure and that sound to get them into range. I really think it helps to have something completely different from what they’re hearing elsewhere, especially something that has the ability to be played very soft.

Thanks Tony, just happened to run across this video last night, good listen.....ChesterC--I wonder how many guys will stick with the trumpet, it takes a long time to figure out, very different than other turkey calls. I have never seen another guy on the public areas I hunt with a trumpet, that might change this year with Pinhoti featuring it recently.

Thanks for posting the video! I'm interested to see how many people try a trumpet as well, but I would guess it won't be a noticeable difference, especially long term. Trumpets take so much practice just to produce an acceptable turkey sound, much less master it. Most people don't take the time to master other calls, whether it be diaphragm or friction, and trumpets are not near as readily available as other calls are.

That being said, after practicing all throughout the past year with a couple wingbones I made myself, this will be the first year I'm carrying a trumpet into the woods. So far I love the sound it makes, and the entire process of practicing for a long time to find the "turkey" in the call. I'm excited to put it to use within ear shot of a gobbler in a couple weeks.

If I’m being absolutely honest I think two things stop most hunters from toting yelpers into the woods: 1) the practice needed to get it right; 2) they don’t have confidence in the sound. That to say, probably won’t see a tremendous increase in use. May see some very good calls coming up on the secondary market a year or two out. Already seeing lots of “custom callmakers” capitalizing on the craze with subpar offerings. For as difficult as it may be to learn to play one, I’d imagine it’s a hundred fold harder to get those internals dialed. I’ll keep spending my money on folks like you and Tony.

Probably won’t be a big increase in usuage, but I bet you will see a lot more in photo opportunities.

Very nice tutorial, good common sense on how to run a trumpet. Thank you for sharing. In all the years I have used one, I have never run into another hunter where I live that has used a trumpet or knows what one is. The learning curve and the need to practice regularly will keep most from not using them.

I am glad you guys liked the video, it was the first time I had done one after a lot of requests over the years. In retrospect, I could have drug that video out for a lot longer, but there wouldnt have been as much instruction to it. I enjoy getting new trumpet users to make that first note on a call and see their face when they get it. After that, I tell them "practice, practice, practice".

Thank you for taking time to make this.

One thing that has helped me tremendously is learning to kee kee on a suction call 1st then reverse engineering everything else from there.
