835 w/ federal hw 7's

Alright my fellow diehard 835ers. Here's a doozy for you. Has anyone tried the heavyweights through a jelly head? I know some folks have mixed feelings on FCW through a ported choke and others say it doesn't matter if you constrict it enough. I guess the question other that has anyone tested it is, will the .690 come remotely close enough to being enough constriction?

I’ve never tried it. The new flex control wad goes through anything. The old wad didn’t like ported chokes. Is this an &35 turkey gun? Mine is old but it came with an unported choke, never actually seen one with one. Why not just use that if this is case. I hunted over 30 years with just that choke

The ultifull turkey choke is a fair bit more open than my original jelly head. I don't remember the exact diameter since it's not published. I knew the tss used the new wads but was unsure about the heavyweights. I found a local shop that keeps a fairly nice stock of heavyweights. If they shoot well it would be a nice option with ammo availability and cost effective to boot.

Federal doesn't make the heavyweight any more so if you find some and like how they shoot you probably need to buy as many as you can.

I did. The pattern from the Jellyhead wasn't as good as my Hevi Shot choke.

The Jellyhead in my 835 puts out a decent pattern and will kill a bird but it's my least favorite choke for my gun.

The original ulti full was a 690, the jelly head was either 670 or 675.  I would be surprised if the jelly head shot well with those heavy weight loads.

The 690 shot good enough with most turkey loads back when I shot mine, it was pre hevi shot days though. I would think the flight control would shoot better with a more open choke.  That gun is over bored hence the reason for the 690, so that is more restriction than it would be in a standard 12 ga barrel.

Typical bore of a 12ga is say .725 to .735 the 835 is .775, basically 10ga specs.

My Binelli shot best with a .660 with a constriction of .063.  The 835 with a .690 is already .085 constriction.

The factory Ulti-Full is .695, the original Jellyhead choke is a .690. I hunted the 3.5 Federal Heavyweights #7s one season in my 935. Out of the chokes i tried(stardot .676, kicks .680, factory x full .715) the kicks choke patterned best for me, 150's in the 10".  Best patterns ive ever seen on here with an 835 shooting 3.5" Fed HW #7s was with the truglo bone collector .670, was over 200 in the 10". The 835s are a different animal as far as constriction is concerned.... 95% of what ive seen is that .670-.685 chokes are gonna pattern the best with most any turkey load. Id say the indian creek .675 is probably the best performing 835 choke on the market. That said, ive seen a lot of great patterns with todays ammo(longbeards &tss) with the more open chokes.690-.695.

I love the original jelly head for long beards and tss. I've posted a hell of a pattern here with the Magnum 5's.i was mostly looking just out of curiosity because long beards are the most popular lead and tss is expensive when you do find it. I figured at 16 bucks a box with a decent supply if the heavwights shot well it would be a good backup option behind tss and lbxr. How were the patterns/ field performance when you shot the hw 7s?

If you're willing to try different ammo like Nitro or Apex... Then an Indian Creek .680 would be on point or stay with the .690. As others have said over board barrel.

The patterns i got with the 3.5" 7s were 150-160 in the 10" circle @ 40 yards. Field performance was good, dead turkeys was the result. Ive been shooting the HW #7s in my 20 ga for years, really opened my eyes to what a 20 ga is capable of.  Thing is i get 140's in the 10" with my 20 ga. No since in lugging that 935 around for 10-20 pellets more in the 10". The HW 12 ga load was always a head scratcher for me and others. I called many of todays well known choke manufacturer's and asked specifically about those shells in a 835/935. None of them could give me a proven choke for those shells, they all had "suggestions" and really wanted to sell me a choke, especially jebs, but ill not get into that debacle.I ruined an indian creek choke with those shells(#5 HW) in my gun early on.On top of all that, those shells would almost always hang and jam up my 935 for some reason. Needless to say i moved on to Longbeards and Hevi 6s in my 935.  The jelly head .690 was always a solid performer in 835s, they were one of the best with Nitro and the Magblends in there time.Id buy a few boxes of HW #7s and try them in your jellyhead and see what you get... but i bet youll see better patterns with longbeards, and tss will blow them both away patterning.

I tried some Fed HW 3.5" 7's I got for cheap this past weekend thru a Carlson's TSS .675 and they shot well, dead bird at 40.  It was a nice even pattern, which is what I personally look for.  I pay more attention to the 20"-30" circle than I do the 10" circle, I like to know what's to the side in case one steps as I shoot.
