28 gauge question
« on: February 01, 2021, 02:40:53 PM »
I've been playing with a cz bobwhite sxs 28.  The left barrel has the lighter trigger and it is designated my longer range barrel with tss.  Question is, once I settle on the choke and pattern for the right barrel, will a 1 ounce load of lead 6s do the trick at 25 yards?  My guess is that it will and I could conserve my tss with the closer shot.

No reason the lead wouldn't work great out to 40 yards.  But my guess is you, like most of us only shoot a handful time each season if you are lucky. With being said, I would load them both up with TSS and make it count especially when talking about a sub gauge 28 or .410. I'm guessing the added $5 per shot cost of the TSS is a small percentage of your overall turkey hunting expense...

You are right.  It dawned on me to call Hal and pick his brain for a lighter tss load.  I could be on to something.

I've been shooting TSS in multiple gauges since Federal came out with it
Several years ago. What I've have found is it is tighter than lead the first 15 to 20 yards.
I try to keep that in mind on close shots. Lead should kill at 25 yards no problems.

A dove load of 7.5 or 8's will work if you keep the shot inside 30. Or ask hal about his 28 gauge waterfowl loads. I Know he has one that is 9/16oz of #9.5 or #10's tss and a light 1 1/8oz turkey load for the 28. I have personally shot the 1 1/8oz load through my fixed modified 870 28 and it did better than the 1 5/8oz load. I killed a couple with the 1 1/8oz load and it was plenty.

Thanks, Jr.  Hal gave me the 1 1/8 ounce load.  That is probably the ticket with some 10s that I have from him.  I'll go ahead and try the 1 ounce lead 6s out of curiosity.

I shoot the same load of tss in both my tight and open barrels. Last season I had a light primer strike on a 35 yard gobbler with my tight barrel. I was glad for the mechanical triggers and the 1 5/8 oz load stoned him with a light mod choke in the other barrel. In another occasion, I accidentally selected the wrong barrel on a 40 yard gobbler.  The light mod choke and tss saved me there too.

Just something to think on

Good advice.  You have any POI issues?

My gun is a browning cynergy o/u. The bottom barrel is my tight choke and it shoots to the bead. My top barrel shoot about 4-5" high, so I just aim with the tip of the bead when shooting it.

The 1-1/8oz of 500 count tss 10's has 562 pellets in the shell

1-1/8oz of 415 count 9.5's has 465 pellets

The federal hw #7 load that everyone liked in the 20 gauges was 1-5/8oz of 219 count 7's with only 355 pellets in the shell and it has killed plenty.

You should easily get 50%+ patterns in the 10" at 40. Do the math..With the gun set up right the 28 with tss isn't giving up much over other gun. My fixed modified barrel preferred 9.5's over the 10, but either would get the job done.

Is your bobwhite shooting POA/POI with the heavier tss loads?

I have a 20ga B.White that shoots lead field loads to POA, but with heavier TSS loads it shoots the right barrel to the rt. and left bar. to the left.

I dropped 1 of Hal's 1 5/8oz loads down to 1oz of #9's for the right (open) barrel, that brought POI back in line.
The 1oz. load averages in the upper 150s in the 10" at 40yds with a Carlsons .575

There’s a method that I have been told of to correct POI issues.
Pm if interested.

Thanks for these replies.  My components just came in to try the lighter load.  I may do that this weekend since we're covered in snow.
