Chucks for striker top?
« on: January 29, 2021, 09:14:54 AM »
Looking to start turning my own two piece striker tops and trying to figure out the best way to chuck it up on the lathe. Any suggestions?

Im thinking use a pen chuck and after turning drill with a tailstock drill bit?

Also looking to modify premade striker tops. Not happy with the weight/balance im getting from them. Ive tried using a bottle stopped chuck but have had several crack. Stumped how to turn these a little more since they don’t have any extra material on the ends

I have inserted the striker tip (or temporary dowel) in my collet chuck and worked on the striker top.

Turn a piece of hardwood down to a slip fit tenon and press it on.  Hold secure with tail stock.   You can turn them and take them off without ever stopping the lathe.

You can’t buy any tooling that will run as true as turning a simple tenon and using it as a work holder.  Spare pieces of dogwood or laminate bitch are my favorite.
