Weatherby SA-459
« on: September 28, 2020, 01:59:29 PM »
I’m looking to set up my new Weatherby SA-459 for this spring. I’m in the process of loading some of Hal’s Big 20 Stubby XXLG, Big 20 Stubby XXXLG and Big 20 XL 9’s.  You all who shoot a 459, what have you had the best luck with as far as chokes/optics/TSS loads go?  I’m not looking for a super hot core but something that is great at 40 yds but not so tight that I might miss at 20. I’ve been leaning toward a Sumtoy .562. Thanks in advance.

Carlson .575 extended, non ported. Sumtoy is better for overall 10in pellet count but was too tight for my liking when it comes to real world hunting.  I just shoot regular Federal TSS #9.  Burris FF3 is the sight I like...

Appreciate it. What kind of range can you get with the .575? I’m definitely looking for a real world hunting choke (not going for pellet count on paper).  I just don’t want to be picking shot from the breast meat after a 40yd shot. Been there done that with another gun/choke combo.

Anyone have any good luck with an off brand red dot type optic. I’d love to go with a Burris or Vortex, but the funding isn’t there. There are so many brands out there now, I was wondering if anyone had given one a shot and had good results.

AT3 Tactical I have seen a few run.   The Swamp Fox also.    Now that said the Burris and Vortex out sales because of a reason.  Just my  :z-twocents:

I have the same chokes for my sa459, Sumtoy and Carlson. I run the Sumtoy often for myself but put the slightly more open Carlson in when my wife is behind the gun.

I've run hw7s, federal tss9s and apex tss 9s all with 100% success for myself

Run the same setup of Sumtoy and fast fire on my 870 - 12ga

Thanks. Are you referring to the Sumtoy .570 or .562?

I have three of the Sa459 in 20, Ya I know that I have a problem.  But my kids like them when they hunt.  I  run a SumToy .562-2, And Indian Creek .555 and a Carlsons .575.  Shooting any of Hal or Ronny's loads produce great results from all three chokes.   Have seen gobblers die from 8yds out to 71 from this combo...
Don't gobble at me...

I too have a .562-2 Sumtoy and a .575 Carlson's for my Weatherby PA459TR which has the 18 1/2" barrel.  I shoot Ronny's, Lil Hammer and have utilized the Carlson's in wooded terrain or where I don't anticipate any long shots.  The Sumtoy produces a dense 10" and even 20" which usually stays in the gun, since I have shot it a lot at ranges from 10-65 yards and am totally comfortable w/ the gun, sights, and shells.  I built a shot recovery trap several years to mollify the cost of shooting and evaluating a lot of TSS shells at various hunting ranges.

Thanks everyone. I assume you are talking about a .562-5?  Thanks again
