Have you ever bought snakewood, much less turned it?

No sir, could not imagine it sounding much different than say a rose wood or a hickory. What makes it so special??

$45 is a very fair price for a snakewood striker.

It would play substantially different than hickory or rosewood due to hardness. Snakewood has a Janka hardness of 3,800lbf, nearly twice that of hickory which rarely if ever breaks 2,000. Beyond that snakewood is one of the most expensive woods in the world. You’re not getting any snakewood striker for less than $45 and if this one had more figuring it would likely command twice that price.

Yeah, $45 is more than fair. Talk to guys that make strikers. There's a lot more work/stress involved, with turning Snakewood.

Okay guys thank you for the education. Been chasing them since 1976. Never to old to learn something new. Might have to look for a snakewood striker

Snakewood also works great, it doesn't just look good. I would be hard pressed to not pick it over anything really. Also, it is a pain in the rear to turn and very expensive, $45.00 is good deal.

" Snakewood works great " is an understatement IMHO. I have a number of different strikers of different woods turned by some fine craftsmen. Many of them sound just fine on my slate, aluminum and crystal pot calls and I`ll not hesitate to use them in the woods. Then, I have set to the side an osage/snakewood striker made by the late Harold Fowler.....

There`s a commonality between snakewood, dymondwood and Macassar ebony that I think makes them the favorites that they are. They`re all hard as a rock. I don`t know what the Janka rating would be for frogwood, which is a birch laminate. Wouldn`t be surprised if it`s not fairly hard itself. I mention it because it`s become so popular.
