Title: Rem 870 Hastings .655, .665 (non-ported)
Post by: Longshanks on May 08, 2020, 04:52:53 PM
Have both of these chokes and curious to know if anyone has shot Federal TSS through them? Although they are lead only chokes many that I have spoken with say this new Federal shell is fine including Kicks.
Anyone shooting these old classic chokes with TSS?

Oh well, figured out some lead patterns with these chokes and XX 3/2/5's and XX 3/2/6's with the 870 Wingmasters. Have a back up gun as well for traveling. Anything inside 40yds is in serious trouble and the 20" patterns are awesome.
Found some Super-X 3/ 1 7/8/ 5's and 6's for less than $6 a box and the patterns are really close to the XX 3" 2 ounce shells. Something about the Red shells that are just a bit slower. They pattern better out of my guns than the new XX 3" 1 3/4 ounce loads.

I agree with the Super X shells. Have really good patterns with 3 " #5. For the price, they hard to beat.

I'm all for giving up 90ft per second or so to put more shot in the turkey compared to the new XX HV shells. #5's traveling 120ft per second faster than Hevi 13 will put them down. For 50 cents a shell.

Not really relevant to your question but for many years I shot a Hastings .665 with WW Supreme High Velocity # 5's with great success. I shot that combo from the time the shells were introduced up until I finally switched over to Hevi-13's and an Indian Creek. I would not hesitate to use that load again. My gun by the way is an 870 3".

Yea man, that is what I shot from the late 80's until the Hevi Shot craze came about.

Rem 870/ 21" bbl with the Hastings .665 with a bunch of different 4's,5's and 6's. The Federal 3/2/5's (Blue Box) and Activ 4's, 5's were serious out of that set up. Interesting how myself and many of my friends have gone back to a similar lead set up. Friend of mine shot at a turkey 3 times to kill it this past season with a hot rod turkey gun and shells.  I asked him how that felt to shoot $36 dollars worth of shells to kill a turkey. Missed twice up close. First shot was 18yds. With a lead set up that turkey would have been dead on the first shot.
