Title: Kent Cartridge TK7 Penetrator Ammunition, 20 Gauge, 3", #7 Shot
Post by: RED NECK on April 20, 2020, 11:24:55 AM
I just came across this ammo up here and was thinking of placing an order for 5 boxes to test.I have never heard of it before this morning. Are any of you shooting this ammo? and what are your thoughts on it?

I ordered three boxes of 20ga #7s. shot a couple through my Weatherby Sa459
with a Carlson .565 turkey choke and a Burris Fast Fire that was spot on.
Pattern with my combo was terrible.......might be different with another setup but I doubt it.
Save your money, I was far from impressed.

I like to test and tinker, money isn't really an issue, however I would like to see if I can get this to shoot from 2 of my 20 gauges.

I believe I can,I already ordered 3 boxes.I am tempted to order 5 more,4 20 gauges and 1 12 gauge box and then 5 for a buddy.I am just waiting to hear from him.He wants them for his two boys to shoot.

I have 8 boxes in total on the way,6 boxes of the 20 gauge and two for the 12 gauges and my buddy went with 2 boxes of 20 gauge.I should have it later this week,I am going Thursday evening for one final pattern session with 4 guns.I would like to have it but if not I will test it when I get it.

I tried it Sunday through my 20 gauge SKB 7300 with a Briley custom .558. They shot similar to Fed #7 heavyweighjts. That is to say that they will be used this year, lol. No load( TSS, lead, or any other load) shoots as well through this combo. I was pleased with the pattern. I will see if they perform well in a coulple weeks.

It patterned fine.It hit high with my fiber optic sights maxed out,I have tried other ammo and these sights hit on, in the one gun I have tried so far.I posted the pattern in the tc 20 gauge thread.I can see it doing very well in other guns and choke combo's.I am not sure which gun I will shoot the 20 gauge stuff from yet.I will be testing the 12 gauge stuff when my single shot arrives.

I may try and test it in my tc 20 scoped when I go to test the 12 gauge.

Other than it hitting high, how do you think it patterned ....specifically compared to the old 20 gauge Federal Heavyweights?  The pattern of the old Federal stuff out of an 1187 with a Sumtoy .562-5 was really good. It had a great all around even hunting pattern at 40 yards.

I never shot the Fed heavyweight #7's as 7's were not legal shot until two years back and I never could find them in 3",just 2 3/4" and I didn't bother. I think they patterned fine and would have no problem dropping a tom at 40 yards.I believe that they would be a great shell,I just will not have time until after season to test with different guns and chokes as I already have all mine setup for other combo's. I  may try it with my tc when I take my 12 gauge to pattern and dial in,when it arrives later this week.

My plan is to eventually set one of my 20 gauges up to shoot this shell and my 12 gauge single shot if all goes as planned. It may be the Tc but I really am not sure yet.

HK.. That was a dead bird. I think ya may want to shoot a big piece of paper. This way you can tell what the rest of the pattern looks like. Good luck and happy hunting.

For me the H-13 is patchy as well with small openings. Contractor paper works nice to shoot at.

I'll have to try that,I was using pallet sized cardboard that I had been stockpiling the last few years but my good friend took a job burning dead bodies at a funeral home after 15 years so I am unable to get more cardboard at the present time.I am down to 2-3 that I will use up in the next few weeks. Thanks for the heads up.

Those pallet sized pieces of cardboard are what I use for my patterning board. I zip-tie the cardboard to a couple of electric fence posts. Then I attach a 3'X3' piece of painters paper to it with thumbtacks, draw a dot on the paper and fire away. I just replace the paper with each shot so I can see the whole pattern. The cardboard will take a lot of shots before it needs to be replaced. Most of the time one piece of cardboard will last a whole patterning session.

Have at it.....not in the ammo business or affiliated with anyone that is,
just sharing my tests. I have spent far too much money testing choke/ammo combos.
In my gun it was very disappointing.....longbeards spanked its arse for 2/3 the money.
For a little more money TSS puts twice as many pellets in the kill zone.

I am a fan of longbeard 5-6's in the 20 gauge,I also am a fan of tss #7 however, the kent tk7 shot pretty good so far through the one gun/choke combo I tested, the tss #7 is 20 dollars more per box of 5 and I agree it is hard to beat long beards 10 shell pricing but its only a few dollars cheaper or the same price around me. I am not brand loyal to any gun company or any shell company. My favorite shell hands down is the longbeards in 12 gauge 3.5" 5's,I am a lead shooter that has started to venture into other the last few years.

I understand that the kent tk7 shell is not going to out shoot the tss shells in most setups, however I like to try and test and it would get real boring shooting the same shells from every setup. I really like the longbeards and get excellent killing patterns at 40 yards but I already believe the kent tk7 is just as good for a killing pattern from the test I have done, the key is definitely finding the right setup for you, and your guns.

Thanks for the info!! Always fun to experiment!!
I have to admit I'm a little bitter spending $115 bucks
Getting 3 boxes shipped here when they shoot poorly
Out of my gun lol.
A good education is expensive!

Yea I saw the paper you posted I just couldn't tell much about your pattern the paper was so small.

It shoots high in my tc/.550 choke,It patterned above the paper on the cardboard the same as it did on it,I'm never going to waste my time counting pellets as I just am not into it as It does not affect my decision in the end.If I am confident with the amount of hits in the "kill zone" then that is all I am after.I am probably going to be testing it again next week sometime in 20 and 12 gauge,I am waiting for a few new guns to arrive before I go some evening and I will post what I shoot.I am hoping to have more time than I did last week. The target itself was  12" x 18" .

Yea I really don't care how many pellets as long as the pattern is even and no holes in pattern.

I had a good friend stop in earlier at my camp and ask if I had time to go and pattern a new gun he bought for his son and with the kent ammo.I never thought of getting pics of what his pattern looked like but with a mossberg 510 and I believe a carlsons .575.It was excellent out to 40ish.

I did however have my Weatherby sa-459 12 gauge with me and I had a box of the 12 gauge kent tk7 shells,I have this gun setup with 3" longbeard 6"s and It throws an awesome pattern with the undertaker .675, I ran one shell at 40 yards and It basically doubled hits in the kill zone, this choke likes this ammo.I will post what I have after I have dinner but I am gong to shoot these shells through that setup for sure,I bought the gun to shoot 3" tss but I found the shell/choke combo for sure.I am taking it in the morning for sure

I am happy with this for a hunting pattern with truglo tru point extreme fiber optics with the peep sight as I took all red dots off my guns and went back to everything but battery operated sights. It was around 515 and was getting windier as we have a storm coming in,wind was blowing in my face from right to left.I sat up against the tires of my truck and used them as a backrest as my bench was at home. This was range finded 40 yards with...

-Weatherby 12 gauge sa459-undertaker hd ported .675

-Kent tk7 3" #7's

I also have a trulock .660 and a Federal tss .640 that I will test these shells through after season but for the rest of May I will be using these shells through this setup.
