Title: Let's Hear What Your Favorite Bore Cleaner Is...
Post by: Full_Fan on April 04, 2020, 12:00:16 PM
Outside of homemade concoctions, what solvent products do you guys like and why?  I'm currently using Butch's Bore Shine mainly because I have it on hand for my rifles and it seems to do a good job on my scatter gun barrels for carbon and plastic removal as well.  Thanks!

G96 and Hoppe's No. 9, just because it's what all my hunting mentors used growing up.

Hoppes 9 and Remington spray bore cleaner, I shoot a chrome bore Benelli so cleaning chores are minimal.

Anything any more American than Hoppes #9 ?  Maybe, but you could probably list them on less than one hand!

I've never used bore cleaner in any of my shotguns.  Just a brush or normally a brush wrapped with in steel wool for a snug fit.

Denatured alchohol. You can buy it in a hardware store. You know the stuff you can soak a toilet paper roll in to make a fire in a coffee can when you are deer hunting if any of you know what im talking about. I do deep clean my barrel usually once a year maybe more if im punching paper a lot, but when I do that I just use hoppes. Ive noticed if you have a lot of plastic fouling hoppes will slick over it........Denatured alcohol starts to dry rather quickly allowing the brush or patch to grab the fouling and pull it out. It doesn't have the oily property of the solvent. So when Im shooting before season, and cleaning between shooting I use only denatured alcohol. Its cheap, and it works very effectively leaving your bore dry and chemical free. Even if I do use hoppes for a deeper cleaning I always follow up with the denatured alcohol. Of course if the gun is going to be stored....then yeah of course I run some oil through it.

You mean there is something other than Hoppe's No. 9?

Butches bore shine.

I do own some butches bore shine but I only use it rifles with very severe fouling. For instance I have a 270 with pitting in the barrel. Cheaper gun with a non lapped bore so it was a rough bore to begin with and with the additional pitting it picks up fouling rather quickly. Sometimes hoppes just don't cut it. If you clean a gun fairly regularly there isn't much hoppes wont take out but in the rare occasion like the one I mentioned butches is a killer.

Great replies.  I use Hoppes #9 for when I polish barrels or deep clean them and use a lot of patches and solvent product.  Butch's ain't cheap :)  But I use Butch's for my regular maintenance cleanings.  Not sure why, I guess I just figure it might do a little better job than the #9 but I can't prove that.  I've heard a lot of good things about Shooters Choice but have never used it.  This is one of those things I don't want to overthink, but I was just wondering what others who are as OCD as I am use...?  Keep the posts coming!

Boretech Eliminator.  And Kroil .

I use the Boretech Eliminator in my AR-15 and it does a great job. Also good old Hoppes #9 still works just fine.

Boretech shotgun blend here.  Seems to do a good job on plastic fouling.  Also use it in my muzzleloader to clean any fouling from the sabots.
