Title: Rem 870 Wingmasters
Post by: Longshanks on March 29, 2020, 04:16:12 PM
Well after shooting the Hevi 13 loads for many years I started documenting the turkeys that I shoot, conditions, yardage, gun/ choke set up.
Only shot two turkeys right at 40yds in the last five years. Majority 20-30yds. The two turkeys missed were with HTL up close and setups that shoot 300+ in a 10. Setups that are super tight up close. Knocked another turkey down with Longbeard 5’s up close. Looked like I caught him with the edge of the pattern. Again super tight in close.
Conclusion is that what I need is a set up that gives me the best pattern from 15-35yds without the softball size pattern up close. Hammering turkeys with no misses with the lead set ups. HTL doesn’t kill them more dead and can increase ones chance of missing shots that would otherwise be easy in a hunting situation.

I was in the same boat with most of my turkeys being shot at 30 to 35 yards. Switched to win xx 3.5” 5s, haven’t looked back. Roughly 120 to 140 in 10” at 40.

I have a 870 Special Purpose magnum with a 26" barrel. I tried the Longbeards 3" 5's with several chokes(.655, .660, .665) and everything was extremely tight in the 15-20 yard range....to tight for my liking. I tried a Carlson .670 non-ported and it opened up my pattern. It went from baseball/softball size to about volley ball size at 20 yards. At 40 yards it is starting to get a little sparse, but will still kill.

I have been shooting the Nitro HVY #5 or # 6 for years also the Winchester Supremes( the old black box black shell the super x does not pattern as well in my Wingmaster even though it’s supposed to be the same load).
15 or so years ago I was shooting a rhino choke and was getting a super tight 20 yard pattern. Really too tight. And like you I very rarely needed to shoot past 30 so I switched back to the Remington  super full choke. Very good pattern at 40 really dense and not too tight at 0-20 and have liked it much better. I have piles of Nitro, magnum blends and Heavy 13 but at 30 yards non are any better than the High velocity win supremes in my gun and I have been able to find a bunch of the old loads in 3” # 5s because no one hardly shoots them, usually for a $1 a round.
