Title: Looking at buying a SX4, Cantilever vs non?
Post by: Bigeclipse on July 18, 2019, 07:59:09 AM
Why cantilever? I was going to buy a 26in camo shotgun in a regular form factor which is drilled and tapped and then throw a red dot on like I always have on my other turkey guns. I only turkey hunt now but maybe someday id duck or goose hunt (doubtful but who knows) which is why I tend to buy 26in barreled shotguns. This will be my 3rd shotgun, the others ive sold as I did not like the cheap quality. It would seem cantilever would make the sx4 more a dedicated turkey gun. What are the pros and cons of cantilever? Have I been missing something by not owning one or is it really not worth to have it since it makes your gun a dedicated turkey only gun by going cantilever. Thanks!

Owned a cantilever on a early remington sps. Did not like it. Did not have as much scope adjustment for eye relief. My smith also told me it caused a lot of vibration in the barrel. I had to agree with him. After it was removed and a mount installed firearm was more accurate. This is my experience anyway. I guess it would be useful if you want to switch out barrels. I have always preferred a dedicated firearm. Good luck with your choice.

thanks for the info. I would love to have dedicated firearms but just cant afford multiple expensive guns. I have to hunting rifles, a 22lr and one shotgun. I would like to purchase a shotgun which can do multiple things but still kick butt for turkey. I never had issues hunting turkey with a 26in barrel so im not worried about length. I prefer my gun to be camo patterned, so I will likely buy a camo pattern shotgun but again, id prefer it be a decent do all shotgun.

Get the universal hunter and forget the flexible cantilever barrel.  I've had the sx2 universal hunter since about 2002 and it's my Turkey gun with an aimpoint 9000. 26" with long Indian creek tube, no issues (except in ground blind).  Scopes shouldn't move and cantilevers flex and move a ton. Doesnt make sense to me.

Thank you for this. I will definitely not be getting the cantilever

I have been reading up on this since I am in the market for a new shotgun and was considering the cantilever turkey model. Has anybody else experienced accuracy issues with This gun?
