Title: SCOTCH-BRITE GRIT CHART--Which color is best?
Post by: idgobble on May 26, 2019, 05:59:28 PM
I've seen topics here about which Scotch-Brite to use for conditioning pot calls. Maybe this chart will help. Preston Pittman once told me that brown Scotch-Brite was best. Some people say never use sandpaper. Some people say they can't see any difference in the green, maroon and brown colors, but there is a difference. I use the brown on everything, but it's hard to find by the sheet.
SCOTCH-BRITE GRIT CHART
3M Scotch Brite Nylon Pads:
7445 - White pad, called Light Duty Cleansing - (1000) 1200-1500 grit
7448 - Light Grey, called Ultra Fine Hand - (600-800) 800 grit.
6448 - Green (?), called Light Duty Hand Pad - (600) 600 grit
7447 - Maroon pad, called General Purpose Hand - (320-400) 320 grit
6444 - Brown pad, called Extra Duty Hand - (280-320) 240 grit
7446 - Dark Grey pad, called Blending Pad (180-220) 150 grit
7440 - Tan pad, called Heavy Duty Hand Pad - (120-150) 60(?)
Green Scotch Brite is available EVERYWHERE. It's 600 grit.
Blue Scotch-Brite is considered to be about 1000 grit.
(The value inside the parentheses is directly from 3M.)
3M Chart
Less Aggressive --------> More Aggressive
7445 7448 6448 7447 6444 7446 7440
Finer Finish --------> Coarser Finish

It informational,but it only really helps if you have access to buy one or the other.. Green you can go anywhere and buy and it works great. Brown I've used if it comes with a call,but then when it's used up I switch back to green..Why??I can buy it anywhere and it works great...

On slate, all we need is a LIGHT scratching to slightly rough the surface and clean the oil on the call brought on from our fingers (Green is fine for that).  Crystal and glass can be taken care of with sandpaper, drywall screen and conditioning stone.  IMO these conditioners can be obtained easily at Wally World, Home Improvement Centers and hardware stories fairly cheap.

I recently used some maroon on a slate call and did not like it at all, I will stick to the green on slate anyway. If a call comes with a certain color I will stick with it until it is gone but then just tend to use green because it is the only one I can ever find.

Yall ever heard of Amazon? If you've got sense enough to get on this forum, you've got sense enough to buy any scotch brite you want. They'll deliver it to your door in 2 days, free shipping

Well that is both true and not true at the same time. The will ship it free in two days if you have Prime but if you do not the shipping can be quite expensive. Also I only found one of the brown pads and it was $40.21 for 6 6X9 pads but the only review on it said he only got one pad for that price. https://smile.amazon.com/Scotch-Brite-16553-6444-Extra-Duty/dp/B01M3R2M7Z/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=scotch+brite+extra+duty+hand&qid=1558928367&s=gateway&sr=8-3-spell#customerReviews I searched under "scotch brite extra duty hand" Oh and it is not covered by Prime so I would have to pay for shipping on top of that.

You're a poor searcher. Let the Amazon search engine do the work rather than getting so descriptive.

Crenshawco, I guess I'm a poor searcher too.  We're looking for brown. This is all I could find for brown--#6444. There's 20 sheets in the box. All we need is a couple sheets.  Do you have a better link?

All I see is the 20 pack as well. That's probably the factory pack. It's only $36 so you wont ever have to worry about buying conditioning pads for the rest of your life. Or sell some

Well the one reviewer said he only go one pad so that does not inspire confidence. None of my friends are the type of hunters we are and would not want to buy anything special and would just save money and buy the green stuff. I think the price is twice what it should be plus you have to play for shipping as it is not covered by Prime. Just not worth it in my book.

Not sure what you're looking at but this one has nothing but 5 star reviews.

That looks more maroon or red rather than brown which is what I was looking for by the list above. In the one picture it even looks pink. Says heavy duty though so maybe the color does not matter after all? Price is still outrageous and so much for 2 day shipping being free even with Prime.

You can tell it's brown by the #6444. Rapscallion has a good solution for 2-3 sheets of #6444 with the Woodworker's Supply link.  One 6"x9" sheet is good for about 8 nice size pieces, which will last me 100 years unless I give pieces away, which I seem to do often.  Actually, I don't think it would make much difference to a turkey if you were using #6444-brown-240 grit or the #7447-maroon-320 grit and the maroon is easier to find.  I wouldn't use the #6448-green-600 grit.

Thanks, though the price per sheet is higher the fact that you don't have to buy as many makes it seem much more worth it.

I use whatever I have on hand to clean slate. I personally cannot tell the difference between the different colors. Now sandpaper and sanding screen on glass or crystal, I can tell a difference.

Always down to try another way of doing it, which do you prefer? I feel I get my best from 120 drywall screen

I use 220 if I want cleaner yelps and coarser grit like 120 or 80 if I want more rasp. I actually use all three at different times on the same call.

Green is easy to find and works.
