Found a pair of toms roosted on public land Wednesday morning but I was no match for the 6 or 7 hens they were tending to before falling off on to private land as a group. This is a tight spot on the side of a ridge, a pond below and the public boundary up on top. Snuck out for a quick hunt before work yesterday where I watched a repeat from the morning before.
So this morning I got in to the woods a little earlier to try to cut them off but wouldn't you know, they worked through where I set up the day prior. This morning was a cooler morning compared to the last two, birds were almost silent, so I remained silent as well. I slipped in behind the group after they left the public when almost immediately a lone hen moved in above me on the ridge, where she began pacing in circles cutting and clucking about 30 yards away. That loudmouth woke the woods up! Two other rogue hens fired up in the opposite direction and started working my way. Now I can hear a raspy hen yelping from the group I was trailing, sounds like she is working back. It wasn't long and I heard a tom gobble just over a saddle, 50 yards away. He's coming back! I spun around on the tree I was standing beside, hit the ground, and 3 minutes later so did he.
This tom gobbled all of three times this morning, twice on the roost (once at a sandhill and once at a goose) and that single time coming over the saddle. Hens flew down in stealth mode. I softly yelped exactly once after fly down before it was evident it was going to be a quiet morning. I owe that sassy hen a thank you card.

It truly was. Spent an hour after the hunt just sitting there on the hill side taking it all in. One of those mornings where the bird was just icing.
