Title: Sneaking & Setting up near roost before light
Post by: gobblerchaser89 on April 10, 2019, 09:03:03 PM
I have seen many videos of people sneaking in and setting up right by roost locations before dark in the am. I was curious how this is done without scaring them. I know nothing about this particularly and would love any tips and information or just anything someone would like to say about the subject. Thanks a lot!

Get a good heading and move in early and slow. No lights if at all possible.

Sit and be quiet and patient.

Then again I did it in total light today and watched them for 4 hours in a tree?

If you go in early enough it’s easy.  I’m talking pitch black.  On your butt and not shuffling around 30 minutes before those first hints of light in the sky.   No lights.  It’s a boatload of fun getting in close.  And high percentage success

Yeah its definitely pretty easy if you are patient, take your time and get there early....really early.  Last year I did almost bust a hen though due to a full moon and 4" of snow on the ground. She putted a few times so I stood still for 10 minutes and waited for the moon to co behind a cloud before I moved again.

My issue isn't getting under the roost, it's getting to where the birds want to pitch down. Seems that even if I sneak in and set my decoys up where they usually pitch down, they decide to fly a different direction most days.

before the birds are awake its not overly difficult, once the sun is starting to come up and they are awake you aren't getting very close. Most guys are not early enough to even try it.
