Title: Weatherby SA-459 Bolt Handle
Post by: ads1 on March 31, 2019, 05:36:28 PM
Anyone having trouble with Bolt Handle popping out when firing the Weatherby SA-459 20 gauge? Any suggestions on a fix. Only fired 100 shells to break in.

Weatherby is NOT great to work with. I have been trying to get a replacement bolt for the 459 12 ga. I bought for my son. When I bought my 459 20ga. The young man at weatherby promised to send a replacement bolt for the 12ga. That was over a month ago. I called a week ago talked to the same person he promised to overnight the bolt that did not happen. I will never buy another weatherby!

Lost my handle also on my sa-459 called weatherby and talked to someone who said one was being mailed.
Two weeks later nada but they are moving to a new location so I’ll give it a couple more days

Weatherby  moved their office to Wyoming. Everything has been messed up for the last month...but should be getting better soon

Had that problem last spring.  Was very lucky to notice the handle was missing and found it both times while hunting. Called weatherby twice to get a replacement. When I did receive the replacement it also came out while hunting, and was not found.  I put the old one back in with a dab of superglue, and I have a piece of braided fishing line tied from the stock to the bolt handle. I have not shot the gun yet, should be interesting.  ( mine comes out when the gun is fired)

Just called them again and was told the handles are in a box that has not been uncrated yet and was told they were working the moved inventory one box at a time which means the handles are probaly last in line and I’m not counting on being able to use my new $600gun for opening day of turkey season.
Not happy  >:(

I would be totally bummed if I couldn’t use it when needed.  Whoever the CS rep is you spoke with at Weatherby needs to escalate this.  I mean people are literally tying a string to it so it doesn’t get lost when they shoot.  WTF?

Mine popped out once this year while patterning.  Thankfully I noticed it.  I’m thinking about calling and asking for replacement to keep on hand as it’s only a matter of time before it happens again.  I may also tie something to it as a safeguard for the time being.

Terry I have experienced the exact run around with weatherby. I’m very disappointed with the service as well and thank god ive got a backup turkey killer.
I spent a good bit of money on shells chokes and of course the gun to not be able to use it opening day.
They have known of this issue for awhile and you would think that with the season approaching or in some states in that as you said it would be a priorty.
Good luck when you go,
Mike

Any updates for Weatherby?  I shot my gun over the weekend, bolt handle stayed put and the braided fishing line did not interfere with anything.

I bought my 20 last may. I was finally able to shoot it and sight it in in January. I have about 30 shots through it, 6 of those with turkey loads. I did not have that issue.  Fast forward a few weeks and I get a text with a picture of a bolt handle, blood and a broken tooth.... He shoots lefty just like I do.  So now I am worried about taking a shot with the gun.  I would think weatherby would want to solve this problem. I dont want to sell the gun, but my only other option is to just remove the handle when I shoot it.  That seems ridiculous to have to do that...

I am glad someone brought this up because I was going to but was hoping weatherby would do something about it.

I've got the sa-08 set up for turkey no problems yet. So what's the problem with all these handles poping out.

Since I did not have any more turkey permits, I traveled with a friend to the NRA Convention. Met some important people there including President Adam Weatherby of Weatherby Arms. We discussed the Weatherby SA459 xtra Green Turkey Gun. Met the technical Staff at Weatherby and discussed bolt handle.

So what did they say about the bolt handle?...are they addressing the issue?...so they have a plan?

Adam acknowledged the problem and said they thought they got a bad batch of handles, and that they would work on a solution to the problem. Call technical support and talk with them.

Hunted and killed 3 birds in  Missouri with mine. I shot one and the boy shot two. First shot was fine, second shot glad I had the fishing line attached to it. Bolt handle did come out, put a dab of super glue on the bolt handle and slid it back in. Third shot it was fine.  Will be calling and chatting with someone about this issue.

I haven't had that issue in my 459 or my SA08s. Have any of you tried a SA08 handle in the 459? It seems with the smaller handle it may stay.

I also got a sa-08 handle from numeric gun parts it fits good I think I’m gonna use it and keep the tactical handle for a back up

I know this thread is dated but did all of you with the issues get them resolved? Did a new factory oversized bolt handle replacement fix some of your issues?... and did the smaller SA-08 handle fix your issue Hossfly01?

Reason I ask, I just completed "break-in" of my new 20ga and had charging handle fly off on 3 of 4 shots with turkey loads.... needless to say, I'm not happy right now.

is this is a newer one or an older one. I know 2 guys that had some olders ones have the handles fly off.  My son shot his first bird with mine on saturday and luckily there were no issues.  It was the first bird with the gun.  I think I bought mine in 2019.

Had no problem with a Sa08. Dang thing is a bearcat to get out when I try though.

good question Ross. For you guys having issues.. can you tell us if your SA-459 is the FULL realtree camo version (which is the newer SA-459)  or the older one that has camo on just the stock and forearm with the big blade (M-16 type) sight.

I have two and they are both the full camo version.  Will continue to run the braided fishing line on both.  Guns only are shot 6-8 times in the spring, so it is no big deal.

Mine is the full Realtree camo version and it started blowing the bolt handle out about three years ago.  I’ve talked with Weatherby several times. They say they’ve redesigned the bolt handle to fix the issue but they’ve sent me the new bolt handles and they are no different then the old ones.  I just talked with Weatherby again a few days ago and they told me the same story so I asked them to send me another bolt handle.  We will see but I don’t have any high hopes that this “new” bolt handle will be any different then the old ones.  This bolt handle issue may not be a big deal to some of you but it’s a deal breaker for me.  Other than this issue I really like the gun but if I can’t get this fixed I’ll be moving on to a different gun.

Mine was bought in 2018 and I have not handle the fly off.  I know of 2 guys that had maybe 2016-2017 full realtree guns and both had them fly off.

Can someone post of a photo of the fishing line attached to the bold handle? I purchased a 2020 model SA-459 and have been getting it setup. Trigger leaves a lot to be desired and now I am worried about losing the handle in the miles of mountains and hills I walk during turkey season.

I wouldn't worry about loosing the handle by just walking, maybe after a shot - take a look and make sure it's there.  I have had (2) of these SA-459.. the older style and new style, never had an issue with the bolt handle.

Bought mine last year and just now getting around to tinkering with it. I have it setup and sighted in, but the trigger will have to be addressed. Not a fan of creep in a trigger and mine has a fair amount on the front end before it breaks. Other than that, seems like a solid compact gun to hunt turkeys with. The first autoloader I have ever owned, as I am a pump guy at heart. Time will tell.
