Title: Maryland 2019
Post by: MDTOM84 on March 25, 2019, 09:07:36 PM
Went out Sunday on some public land, had 3 gobbling across the road on private and 3 on the public in the roost. No ground gobbling.

Just left from Maryland. Would have loved to do a turkey hunt again up there. Was gonna try Patuxent Research Refuge.

Western MD has been hot this week while on the limb. Birds gobbling everywhere I've gone. Silent once their feet hit the ground. Still in large groups but lots of strutting.

Cecil county, Sat. morning, around 7 ish am, heard 1st gobble of the year from deck while letting the dog out. Not a lot of birds in our area, so was real happy to hear. Had to be still on roast, was far off.

Been hearing some roost gobbling for the last few weeks in Montgomery and Frederick. Mostly on high pressure days. Going out again to listen tomorrow.

They were gobbling in Harford yesterday morning. A couple of  times on the ground, but they had a wad of hens with them.

Went to some state land this morning and only had 1 bird gobbling way off. Then went to some new "to me" private property and had 2 strutters and a hen in the field. We walked around the other side of the property and I hit the owl call and had another one gobble.

Without a doubt I heard 200 gobbles between 5 birds from 610 - 730 on this extremely foggy morning. Sunday was pretty similar in another area with 6 birds tearing it up. Yesterday heard three but they were not as hot.

Birds are more visible in the last 7 days as well. Found a strutter working a hen at 1.

In the first 16 minutes of gobbling yesterday I heard 111 gobbles. Hearing a few distant birds so far this morning, we will see if they heat up the next 30 minutes.

Coming down from PA to camp and hunt the first 4 days in western MD. I don't expect much gobbling after fly down this early but hoping to come away with one.

Western md seemed a little off this year... I know I'm getting older and my hearing ain't what it use to be but man I was ready to go get a hearing check!!! I heard two workable gobblers this season... I actually ended my vac week early because my grass needed cutting

I had one day of gobbling myself, and I wear Howard Leight's.

First 4 days were tough didn't expect that much hunting pressure, birds didn't gobble great once on the ground with hens covered a ton of ground and learned the area and birds some. I heard birds everyday got close a few times.

Played hooky yesterday and drove down for a single day of all day hunting. Covered an obscene amount of ground but struck a bird at 4:38pm and pulled the trigger at 4:45

Maryland was as tough as any state I've been to, but with beautiful country and lots of ground to roam I've become pretty fond of the place. Awesome!!  Western MD birds can be tough but when it comes together it's worth it.  And like you said some of the prettiest scenery anywhere.  If you don't mind me asking we're you in Garrett or Allegany County?
