If your better half wanted to learn to call what surface and striker wood would you start her out with? Which do you feel would be the easiest to learn on for a beginner? My opinion would probably be slate or glass probably in that order. Not sure about Striker wood.

Do over look ceramic, I think ceramic is the easiest surface to run.
-
I’d go with slate and a dymondwood or laminate 2 piece striker
-
Slate with blk.locust or ceramic with blood wood. Ipe will work well on ceramic too. Both very easy surfaces to play and these strikers grip well.
-
Slate with a hickory striker.
-
Slate with a tulipwood striker !!

Slate, Crystal or Ceramic surface and for strikers I would say Ipe (Slate and Ceramic) Tulipwood (All 3 surfaces) and Purpleheart on a Crystal. I would throw in Diamondwood as well for all surfaces.

I concur

Ceramic pot with a dymondwood or whatever sounds best to you. The thing about ceramic is it runs like a slate but typically have more versatility in their volume than a slate would. And with the right striker it will run wet.

Get a Dawkins plastic pot slate, crystal or aluminum to me there all easy to play and sound good.
-
crystal or ceramic would start out 2 piece striker maybe a bit on heavy side till she got fell of the call striker
-
Green slate to me me it’s a hybrid slate ceramic and it plays real easy with a dymondwood or a tulip wood striker
-
Slate is pretty easy to start on and is easy to condition. I think glass can be easy also.
-
Another vote for Ceramic/ dymondwood striker with slate / hickory a close second
-
I would agree with slate but would suggest a couple strikers one would be the wood of your choice the other would be a carbon or aluminum striker for damp mornings or rain

Lots of good info here guys. Looks like a close race between slate and ceramic. I think I’m gonna go with ceramic because that is the one surface we don’t have. Thanks

Stumpy, Halloran, American Strutter, Daybreak, Paul Durham, and Houndstooth all make fantastic ceramic pots.
