Title: Long Beard XR #6 question
Post by: mbarnes122578 on March 04, 2019, 01:51:28 PM
Does anyone have field experience with Long Beard XR #6 out of their 20 gauge.  They pattern very nicely out of my mossberg super bantam with both a carlson .575 and truglo ssx choke but my question is about is about terminal performance.  The general consensus is that lead #6 carry enough energy and penetrate adequately for clean kills out to 40 yards but the standard lead turkey load has a velocity between 1200 and 1300 f.p.s.  Long beard 20 gauge loads state a velocity of only 1000 f.p.s.  At this lower speed, will long beard #6 still kill cleanly at 40 yards every time or am I better of using #5's.

I have a post on here with the federal tss 9 and my 870 youth at 40yds with the carlson longbeard choke.  It averages 280-310 in the 10@40yds. I just recently tried the carlson .575 with the same shells and got around 150 in the 10@40yds. My gun just didn't like that choke with that shell. In my gun the longbeard choke shoots everything well.  Right up there and often times better than my indian creek .555. Sorry couldn't post any pics at the moment.
