Title: Poll: What's your favorite red dot?
Post by: valerio024 on March 04, 2019, 08:38:16 AM
I am looking to put a red dot on my turkey gun.  What is everyone's favorite?  I see there are a lot of Burris Fastfire III fans as well as Vortex Venom fans.  But I also see a lot of comments about the Mueller Quick Shot and the Bushnell TRS-25 and they are half the price or less.  But I would be worried about reliability, holding zero, and battery life with a cheaper model.  So what's your opinion on red dots?

I used a fast fire2 for years and never had any problems with it. I switched
to a vortex venom 6moa a couple of years ago because you can change the
battery without removing the sight and also liked the 6moa dot. It has been trouble
free as well. I dont think you can go wrong with the FF3 or the Venom.

I've used the the Bushnell TRS-25 for the last 3 years with no problem.  Still on the same battery, But I have to admit I don't shoot it often. I check the zero, (it hasn't changed) and shoot it twice a season if lucky.

I've used the Bushnell TRS 25 for several years with not problem .. Buy the Bushnell TRS 25 and you will still have money left to buy some TSS....

Trijicon Reflex 2 sight. I bought it used at a decent price about 10 years ago.

No on or off to remember, no battery to change, no light adjustment.

Has worked so far in every situation I have needed it.

The one drawback is it sits high on the gun. I use a Beartooth comb raising kit to help with that.

It has a yellow dot tho.  ;D

Bushnell Trophy Red dot.  It has been on my dedicated 3 1/2" 835 for 10 years now with zero problems.  It's been to Florida twice, Kansas and South Dakota with no issues.

^ great idea here.

I have the TRS 25 as well, shooting the Fed HW and Hevi 13 in 3". Best purchase I've made.
I did have a quick shot. They do have great customer service.

I bought a Red Dot scope but didn't like how high it set.  So I bought a FF2 with the 336 mount and I love it.

I'm happy with my Burris FF III.

The Ade Optics reflex sight on my sons 20 gauge seems good quality minus some of the nice features on the Burris FF but for $40 your not going to get bells and whistles. Not sure how it would handle 3.5" loads though so I'll just keep it on the little gun.

Leupold Delta Point Pro 2.5 MOA

I like that the unit will go to sleep after 5 min of being in active. The unit comes back on with any movement of weapon. Unit has easy access to on/off and brightness settings as will as the battery if needed.

I know several guys that have the Vortex Venom and they like them very well and have not had any issues with them.

Another TRS-25 user here.

I have three of them. One on my Mossy 500 12 ga 20" barreled turkey gun, as well as my 303 British and 7.5x55 Swiss deer rifles.  They seem to be handling high counts of heavy loads with out an issue. And are not effected by rain, snow or extreme cold (coldest so far were three consecutive -5F days during deer season). Though I did keep the lens cover on until I needed to shoot during one deer hunt in blowing rain and sleet. Great battery life. Thinking about putting another one on my 44 mag 629 for handgun deer hunts.

Overall it has proven to be a great value and solid performing red dot.

Be well all

I have 2 Holosun Red dots on ARs and like them both.  Good price.  Love the features-instant on when the gun is moved is a nice feature.  Never shot a reflex site on anything though. I have been pleased with Holosun and there is a shop locally owned by a buddy of mine that sells them, so I would probably stick with them.  If I have a problem, I can take it to him.

Burris FF3 is what I use. I like it because it's small. My son has used a trs-25 for the past few years with no issues and killed several birds. We also put one on a 30-30 that he killed 7 deer with. We're switching to a FF3 this year for him as he wanted something a little smaller and lighter. You can't go wrong with either.

FastFire 3 on a Speed Bead base.  I gave my FF2 to one of my best friends and it sits on his tricked out 870 turkey slayer.  Lifetime guarantee and made in USA

I have a FF 2 and a 3, vortex venom, and an Aimpoint 9000sc. I love them all and can't go wrong with any of them. I have to give a shoutout tho to Burris's customer service. First time I mounted that FF2 I stupidly stripped one of the mounting screws and ruined the included base. Burris no questions sent me a new one.
The second time I called them I lost that flimsy rubber protector that comes with it and called them up to see if I could buy a new one. Explained to the guy on the phone I lost it while turkey hunting, then the guy starts laughing it up on the phone and said he's lost count how many of them silly things he lost over the years turkey hunting. We talked hunting for well over 15 minutes and assured me he'd personally put one in the mail free of charge as soon as our phone call ended.
When I received the package from Burris a few days later he sent not 1 but 4 of those protectors with a handwritten note thanking me for my business. Needless to say I'm a customer of burris for life

FF3 as well. Suddenly after three years, mine wouldn't turn off. Sent it to Burris and they replaced it no problem. Just bought another FF3 for a new project.

I have two of the Fastfire II's (2011 & 2016/2017) and have been very pleased with them. I prefer them over the FF3 due to the simplicity of use. The only drawback is having to remove the II from it's base to replace the battery. I don't need to replace mine but every 3-4 years so it's not a big deal to me.

I have a bushnell trophy red dot (straight red dot without the reticle options) on a Weatherby sa459 20 gauge. I also have a Burris ff3 with a Sumtoy Mount/ protector on a Winchester Sx3. I like them both...the Burris is a lot lower profile though

I had a Bushnell for around 6 years but some sort of a seal must have broken.  If it rained or there was heavy fog it would be unusable for days.  I replaced it with a Burris Fast Fire 3 and that has been problem free for at least as long.

I have 2 aimpoints  (H-2 and T-2) and a vortex sparc 2. the vortex is ok, I prefer the aimpoint it is a high quality product which is pricey.  Larue tactical has the best prices. the optic comes with a quick detach mount. aimpoint come with a battery that lasts about 5 thousand hours .

I was gifted a Sightmark Mini Reflex sight about 4-5 years ago.  It's the only red dot sight I've ever owned.   I've had it on my TC Encore turkey gun and it has stood up to a diet of heavy turkey loads and some slug shooting without a hiccup.  It's the most basic red dot Sightmark makes, probably cost about $60, and has a 3moa dot with two brightness settings.  Just shows that you don't have to break the bank to put a red dot on your turkey gun.

I have several FF IIs, dependable sights. This year I opted to try a Sig Sauer Romeo 5. Turn it on and leave it on. It shuts down automatically after a minute of no movement. Move the gun slightly and it turns back on. They are boasting 40,000 hours of battery life

I have a Bushnell trophy, a bushnell TRS 25 and a Nikon spur. I like them all.  The Bushnells have proven themselves over time on heavy recoiling shotguns. The spur is new,  but I really like  it's lightweight and very clear glass. That said if I were to buy any new red dot it would have to have an auto off feature to save the battery.

Why did you replace it?  Bushnell has a Fantastic replacement policy.  If you still have it, get it replaced or repaired.

Only have experience with the FF3 and Bushnell TRS-25. I like the low profile of the FF3 and how you do not have to remove the sight to do a battery swap. I change the battery at the beginning of every season.

I like the TRS-25 sight on an AR more as it is cheaper and only used for plinking. It has more of a larger profile. I didn't like it on a shot gun because of the "tunnel vision" I had with it.

Bushnell Trs 25 has held up like a champ for me. I also love my FF3. If your on a budget i don't think you could go wrong with the trs 25. The only things that i found negative about them are the factory lens covers are easy to lose, and the lens tint is a little dark for my taste in dim light.

I have used the FF3, Vortex Venom, an Aimpoint 900SC and the Bushnell. Of all of them the Aimpoint is the cadillac. However, I have determined that I like a regular crosshair reticle scope better than all of them and currently run a Leupold 2-7x33 and think I am through searching for the best option for turkey gun optics now.

I recently added a Vortex Venom with a 3 MOA dot to my 835. This is the first red dot type sight that I have ever used.

This week I filled both of my Fla tags on 2 nice Osceolas using my new sight. Both shots were just under 30 yards and both were clean kills. One shot was early in somewhat low light and the other was a mid morning bird with bright sunshine. In both cases I had no problem seeing the dot and the size of the 3 MOA dot was exactly what I had hoped. Large enough to easily see, yet small enough to not cover too much.

So far I'm obviously very pleased with the results.

I own a TRS25 and a burris fastfire 3...hands down the fastfire 3 is better BUT I have no issue using the trs-25.

The fastfire 3 is on my turkey gun and the trs-25 bounces back and forth from an AR15 to my 44mag revolver. I put it on my shotgun and did not like the lack of field of view and it sat a bit higher and I was not sure it would handle 12gauge punishment (I am no longer scared of this as it handles 44mag punishment just fine). Anyways, the burris FF3 is lighter, smaller, and gives a nice field of view since the housing is small (if the turkey runs outside of your field of view...you can still see it since the edges of the FF3 are so skinny). I close my left eye when I shoot (I have tried the whole both eyes open thing and just cant do it). So if it were between the 2...id save up for the FF3 and get that but if you truly cant afford it, which some cannot, then id have no issue using the TRS25.
