Title: Who uses TSS loads?
Post by: roverboy on February 03, 2019, 02:26:39 PM
I just wondered how popular the TSS loads are with the members on here. I've never tried them myself. I shoot Winchester Longbeard XR and can't see that I need anything "better". I think they're a good idea in 20 gauge and smaller calibers but, In 12 gauge most guns and choke combos will kill great to 40 yards. Just my 2 pennies.

I tried federal tss #9s last year. They are better than the long beard XR but they cost more

I do.  and I don't are if other loads will kill just as dead, I'm gonna shoot the best that I can afford... period.  If they come out with gold plates unobtanium waffle shot that is better than tss I'll shoot that.

At 40 yard shooting targets there is quite a big difference in the number of shot in kill zones

I do. Loaded my own a few years now. No desire to buy factory TSS loads though.

Nobody really needs TSS. Lead works great - but I roll my own TSS shells because I enjoy it, love seeing birds fold under my hand loads, and like the better odds with more pellets.

I've been looking my own for a few years now.  I haven't found anything better.

Been loading and shooting them for ten years. Nothing else comes close.

We use them also, like others I load my own and enjoy it. Killing birds with the shells I have loaded is rewarding.

Ditto.  Killed my slam using handloads in my 20ga.  Working on my slam with handloads in my 28ga.

I know they are awesome but, for my money I'm satisfied with Longbeards. Like I said in 16 gauge , 20 and smaller they are great. But, I've killed several at around 40 yards and absolutely rolled those birds. I personally am good. For everybody else keep using what works.

Another here. I don't have the time to hunt outta state so with PA hunting I shoot 1 shell to be sure its POA/POI is intact then with luck 2 birds so 3 shells a year is well worth it for me. If I hunted multiple states I'd probably hunt with longbeards just because of the cost

I am going to give tss a try this year. I have shot Nitro loads for years, but I am going to give the federal tss a shot

Just started loading it myself this year. Now if the weather ever agrees I'll pattern it.

I'm gonna try the Federal TSS, this spring.
The only thing I've shot with them so far is paper, but I was quite impressed.

I decided to try it last season but was only able to get one box of the federal in no.7. It shot real close to the same pattern as my longbeards. I didn't kill a bird with it but the selling point for me was when I shot a coyote that busted my setup while working a bird. The tss hit him like a freight train at 40 yards.

I started loading Tss this year. I'm happy with my decision. 2 3/4" 1158 fps, 2oz #9

I'd like to try the 9's if they ever become legal in my state. The 7's really haven't impressed me all that much where I'd change right now.

Indiana is 7 1/2 and it makes a difference having used #5 lead for many many years. The thing I like most is the quality control. That and the zen place I go when I'm loading.

This spring will be my first season using TSS. I'm eventually gonna load my own. I've used he isbot and Fed heavyweight for years with awesome results. I can only imagine how TSS is gonna be. To me, switching to Hevi 13 was like when I first switched to carbon shafts in my bow. The Fed HVYWT was like goin to small diameter, heavy walled shafts. TSS is gonna be like small diameter shafts with brass inserts. It's gonna hit like a freight train!! But at the end of the day, it's whatever you have confidence in. Lead or TSS or anything in between. Good luck and safe hunting to all.

Autocorrect got me!! That was intended to say Hevi shot, not isbot!!! Lol

I shoot hand loaded TSS #9s in a 20 ga. They shoot as well as my 3.5" 12 with longbeards. I switched where I could shoot a lighter 20 with less recoil without being under gunned. I would still shoot longbeards if toting the 12.

This is the first year I'm using tss. I have always loved longbeards so I feel like I have a really good safety net.  I'm hoping they do well for what they cost.

Tss is not needed, but is very forgiving. You can be off a little left or right. Or even a shot you say is 40 and turn out to be something different. I'm from NC and only get two birds a year. Shells could be $20 apiece and I'd still pay it. My $5-$6 tss shell doesn't cost me near as much as I'll spent in gas this season.

I have a box for my 20 gauge, but I have 3 boxes of hevi shot as well. I am not getting it for my 12 gauge.

I'm a tss fan. My buddy handloads them.  They aint cheap but these stubborn birds in Florida dont always make it inside 30 yards. With the pressure on public land you have to make every oppurtunity count.  I'm very close to switching to a .410.  But a .20 will probably be next. Tired of toting the old heavy Chevy Remington 870.

This will be my first year trying the TSS craze. Like the patterns that have been posted. Bought a TC turkey 20 g barrel for my Encor. Also decided to mount a scope on it for the first time. I'm okay with open sites but had a couple kills at close range where the pattern did not open as desired. Will be shooting Federal #9's with an Indian Creek .555 choke.

If everything goes well I may start loading my own as I already have everything except the roll crimp and components.

I shoot handloads in my 20 ga. It has added a new dimension to the season for me. I enjoy loading them and it is no more than what I have paid for Hevi shot in my 12 ga.
