Title: Sp-10 23" barrel choke preference
Post by: BTH on January 31, 2019, 10:47:47 PM
Sold a comp n choke I use to use.
In the market for a new choke. I use my 10 mainly as a field Hunter, food plot, open space turkey gun. I am one to mainly shoot em close as I like to watch the "show" as long as possible. I have never been one to shoot past the typical 40yd mark no matter what the situation.
I have it narrowed between getting either a Sumtoy or Roberts made. Or possibly a Kicks...possibly the .690
Loads will be a few of the Winchester supreme #5 leads to pattern and mainly burn through to be done with them.  I will be quickly moving to the mag blends or another factory load to hunt with.
Suggestions?

Just curious, have you ever touched off a Mag Blend in 10 ga? Worst recoil I have ever experienced in any weapon period.

Haha...no not yet. I have heard it's rough.
Wondering if it is as bad as the old rem nitro mag #4 lead green/yellow box. If you didn't have your face tucked on the comb tight enough you would literally end up with an egg on your cheek.

I have 23in sp10
I have  shot several quality chokes over the last 24 years in it  rhino .685, rhino 720, pure gold 690 etc...

The rhino .685 is the best all around choke I've seen so far but the best shooting combination is the kicks .690 amd.the federal 2.25 that will produce upwards of 219.in.a.10 at 40yds

The hardest recoiling load I've ever shot is the nitro 3 ounce load ......serious kicker

Thanks guys. That leans me harder toward the gt .690

Love this gun. Use to be my cleanup rig for crippled waterfowl until I discovered it's ability with an ic choke with steel over the decoys back in the late 90s. It's like shooting lead all over again.
Nice to see there are good combos for bringing it up to speed with chokes and shot for turkeys now.

The aftermarket choke that I currently have is the jellyhead.  I put the extrafull flush mount in the other day just to try some different loads in.  I have really not been overly satisfied with the jellyhead with Nitros, Mag Blends, or Hevi 13.  I am sure that the Indian Creek would be best, but I don't see it listed in the choke section of Midwest turkey call.

I have the kicks .690 in my sp 10 with a 23" barell. I have not Turkey hunted with my ten rig for a few years.  I have the itch to take for a walk through the woods this spring

I have had good patterns with the Jebs 680, and the Rhino 690
