Title: Alps Grand Slam Speed Seat MOD
Post by: Gobble! on January 19, 2019, 04:27:54 PM
The only thing I've never really liked about my Alps vest is the magnets that hold the seat up. In normal walking conditions I've never had a problem with them but if I was in a hurry or carrying anything the magnets just wouldn't pass the test.

I've always said the Cabelas speed seat design was the best but never thought of modifying the Alps vest until I saw one of Dave Owen's videos where he did just that.

Did it myself yesterday and it was pretty simple. Maybe 30 minutes and $4 elastic webbing.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074ZSXTZ4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Started by cutting off the existing straps on the side of the seat. I reused the buckles. The existing straps are 3/4" I believe and the elastic is 1" but it will fit in the buckles.

I made a cut on each side of the seat and shoved a rod through to then pull the elastic through. This looks like what Cabelas did and I assumed that was to allow there to be enough stretch in the elastic to flip the seat.

There is a hard rubber and a foam lining inside the Alps seat. I ran the elastic in between those layers. I made a couple stitches where I cut the fabric.

Then it was just putting the elastic through the buckles and snaping them back to the existing location on the Alps vest.

Seemed to turn out great. Without the kickstand you can still use the magnets. With the kickstand it doesn't want to fold up as well. May just need to play with it a little more but glad I decided to do this. We will see how my stitches hold up.

Question? How long is the elastic straps on each side of the seat and through the seat?

1 yard total length.

I did pretty much the same thing to mine. I went to Walmart and got two dog collars for $1 each to make straps out of.

So you don't have to unbuckle the elastic straps? Just flip it down and you are good?

nice work.  if i have one complaint on the grand slam it's how difficult it is to get the seat to reattach to the magnets, especially if you've got bulky items in the game bag.  typically when i'm done with a spot i'll slip the vest off and reattach the straps and just unbuckle at the next spot.  the speed seat was my favorite thing on the tt vest.

Correct. Grab the seat, flip it, and sit down in one motion. When done flip it back. Not need to buckle/unbuckle or worry about a magnet.

Great idea!
I went with a less inventive fix, but it works. I bought some small but powerful magnets and sewed one in between the two that came with the vest (on seat). On the vest itself, I sewed in a flat washer (also between the existing magnets) so the magnet would have something to be attracted to. Works pretty well...

Nice mod!  I've never owned a Cabelas vest but it sounds like the same design that's on the K&H RNG vests...

Well apparently on the new alps vest they switched the buckles around.  The female buckles are on the seat instead of vest, so if I cut them off not sure how I'd attach them to elastic webbing (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190206/454ceda387ffd1ffb69b8d709631bbc2.jpg)

I was thinking of just getting a set of aftermarket buckles that would work with the existing straps, and adding the elastic through the seat like Gobble did.

Well got the mod done on mine. Couple hours with the sewing machine.  Not the prettiest, but the speed seat works great.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190217/8d364029cb83c25a0d101a65bb850940.jpg)

I bought mine used and it must be an older model because it didn't have seat straps period. I went back and redid mine the other night using some elastic. Works great! Thanks for the idea!

Excellent idea!  My biggest complaint thus far.  The other problem besides the magnets, is if the feet are in teh wrong placeyou will disloacte your shoulder trying to get it re attached or even in place when you sit down.

How far up or down the seat when in the upright position do you think you need to cut the slit to run the elastic strap through

Thanks for reviving this. My least favorite part of the grand slam vest has been the magnets on the seat as well. Gonna make this happen before season hits. Easy fix.

I can measure and get back to you but if you look at the third picture I posted you can see where the plastic rod is pushed threw. That gives you can idea of where I put it.

Anybody know if this mod can be done on the nomad? Curious because of the two short buckles on the bottom of the seat?

MAN!!!! This is awesome. I did this yesterday to my vest and it works great. The magnets in my vest sucked, I even added a few and it still sucked, maybe got a little worse. and that pad would always get hung up in the tops of my boots.... NOT ANYMORE!!! THANKS FELLAS!

Has anyone modified the newer vests that have the female buckle on the seat without the use of sowing machine? I was thinking of trying the same mod and trying to find 2 female ends to put on the elastic strap, but I don't know how difficult it would be to find the correct size.

I did mine last year.  All I did was take the male buckles off of the sewn on seat straps and attach them to some 1" (or 1 1/4", I can't remember) elastic that I ran through the back of the vest and behind the top side cinch strap on each side.  No sewing or major alteration involved.  Used it all last year and it worked great, plan to use it again this year also.

I did this mod a couple seasons ago and it's been great! Got elastic on Amazon. Only sewing required was folding the ends of elastic to prevent pull through.

Elastic arrived today. This works on a Knight &Hale Run n Gun seat! Very cool, simple fix.
Seat deployment wasn't horrible but this works even better. Ran the elastic thru the existing slot attached the male end clips to the elastic, adjusted it some and I'm all set.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210222/23d31a22e19083b1c0c27b5e04102c0b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210222/148b23278092c8d2eae09b6bc9ee8ca4.jpg)
