What is your favorite box call? I have used a Moss Double Tone for the last 20 years, but sat on it during last turkey season. Apparently, Moss Double Tone is out of business now as their website isn't up and an email to the company was returned as undeliverable. That being said, it looks like I'm in the market for a new (and different) box call. What do you all use, and why?
do I have to pick one?? I'm gonna answer this with call maker only because i have several different wood combo's from these call makers, This is not in any sort of order. These guy's all make outstanding sounding calls. I personally carry these calls so I'm only giving there names, there's many many other good call makers out there. My suggestion is to call a few of them and talk directly to them.
Jeff White , Albert Paul , S.S , David Halloran , Spring Creek, Ernie Fetters
1984 Quaker Boy grand old master Supreme grade
Quaker Boy Hurricane box call.
I have several by different call markers , what i look for is a turkey in the box , i look for that special tone and sound that will get a turkey to respond or at least reaction ... Call makers have different ways of making and tuning calls and few added secrets ... so you will just have to contact them and get sound files and like them on facebook or become friends so you can hear boxes being played .. etc ... Different wood combo's have different sounds ... Some call builders have a better ear for tuning call's .. some like a clear sharper sound on the front of the box with rollover rasp on the back end ... some like lot's of rasp .. it's just up to you and what makes your ears pop. Lot of good custom call builders on this forum.. they are always willing to help...
I have an old Quaker boy Boxcall I think is made of butternut. I've had more gobblers answer that old Boxcall than all the other calls I've owned or used combined.
I'm a call maker, but I'll admit I'm partial to Albert Paul
I like my Firedup (l.T.Pack) box call. I guess he is still building them. You can tell him what your looking for in sound and chances are good he will come pretty dang close. He goes by Firedup on this board. He's a fine fellow who happens to make a pretty dang good box call. Shoot him a pm. If nothing else you'll get to talk to a good ole WV boy.
I have a Steve Brown box that is my personal favorite

There are none on thereat the moment..............but the Moss Double Tone is a fairly common visitor to eBay.
Wendell Lancaster is my favorite box call maker. His Jatoba/Holly is my favorite box. It sounds like a turkey and it just kills turkeys.

I've got a couple of Spring Creek and S&S calls that I love and use a lot.
But I never leave the house without an old original Quakerboy old grand master call that I've had for years.
Albert Paul
Steve Mann paddle call. I have an '04 that has called in turkeys all across this country. It's my go to.
Thank you all for the replies. I think I'll always have a problem paying three figures for a box call, but a few of the makers (Spring Creek and Gooserbat, especially) looked intriguing.

I have no problem paying for a quality call but some are outrageous.

I also use a Moss Double Tone as my go to box. I have had one for 15 years or so. I sat on mine a few years ago and bought 2 just in case they stop producing them. I haven't looked yet but they were available from Midwest turkey supply last year I believe. Love that box and have never seen anything like that.
I carry an old Doug Camp Screaming Hen box I purchased from him about 30 years ago when he was still alive. It's my favorite box call and I hunt it like he would have wanted. Sometimes I see them on Ebay from time to time but they have gotten sky high.
Several years ago I bought a cedar over butternut longbox from a retired preacher down in Eastern Kentucky. I can't recall the gentleman's name but his boxes were called Kentucky Thunder. It was a real bargain at $35 and my favorite box call.
Albert paul and marlin Watkins are some you can't go wrong with, plenty of great box call makers out there.
Billy White Hustlin Hen and Lonnie Mabry Cedar and Walnut
Jeff White his calls are fantastic!

Marlin watkins and richard hudson hands down.
This is a Tough One!! I am going to say that it is a Toss up between my Melvin Newman Red Cedar Box with a Black Walnut Lid and my Steve Turpin Teak Box with a Beech Lid. The Newman Box was 65 Dollars back in 2000 and the Turpin Box cost 150 bucks in 2007.
2 members here have high regards for the Moss Double Tone. I think, I will unretire the one,I have after reading what they wrote. Never really took that out much. MY Moss Double Tone is not Red Cedar. Signed by the call maker as well back around the late 1990s.
My Scott Basehore cedar/butternut shortbox. That thing is all turkey
SS box call
Darren Dawkins
Halloran Ebony/walnut

David Hollaran is hard to beat I like his box calls really well
Matt Van Cise
I got Gooserbat's new box call in the mail today. It's well built, and sounds great. Can't wait to try it out this spring!
I carry an Eddie Wynne and one I made myself. If I had to take just 1 it'd be the Eddie Wynne.
Watkins,Mann..Have a old Quaker Boy that got it done back in the day before I got the call Bug...
Steve Mann, Albert Paul and Bob Harwell. Would hate to have to rank them.
I have a Quaker Boy Boat Paddle that just grabs turkeys by the ears & pulls 'em in.
Jim
:z-winnersmiley:My favorite box call is probably my Old Lynch Raspy Hen. Sounds amazing. Or my Southland boxes.
Lamar Williams
Got my first SS box this year a kwilla/butternut. It went in my vest and I ordered another one!
Have most of makers mentioned in this thread. Best 75 bucks I've spent on a call!
I have a Rohm brothers purr-fect box call, used to be pure poison on gobblers but it doesn't quite sound the same any more!
